ESPN Stats and Info-Top 5 Defenses

According to Schad the rankings are based on how many points each team's unit contribute to scoring margin and are weighted for strength of schedule...which is probably where Michigan State suffers. They are ranked #11.

Just found it interesting. FSU has the #2 offense as well.

I'm telling you, our offense is good. Good enough to win with. It's our defense that ***** the bed each and every week .

Our offense has been terrible against any D with a pulse.. Yes the defense is worse but that's besides the point.

No kidding. I don't care what measure you use, Florida State and Virginia Tech are right near the top. I mentioned last week that Virginia Tech was one of the best in the country in yards allowed per play. That's always a tell tale stat. It's been comical on Canes sites for several years when the Seminoles have been ripped as a fraud, despite allowing only 4 yards per play.

Somehow there was plenty of confidence on this board when we were playing a very good team that was in a favorable situational spot, as road underdog after two straight losses as favorite. We were in a terrible spot after losing for the first time late in the season, and then facing the reality that we'd likely plunge toward our #27 preseason rating. You always want to delay that first loss as long as possible, just like maintaining a shut out is vital. Once a team breaks the clamp, the points tend to flow. The media never mentions that at all, just like they are inept in pointing out situational variables. Lou Holtz will mention it, "You don't get the same team every week," but he doesn't provide specifics. I doubt he has them...merely a general knowledge.

This week there's more pessimism than last week despite the fact we are playing a considerably weaker team than a week ago, one that was rated considerably below us in preseason, and one that doesn't possess nearly as stingy a defense as the two teams we've just faced. Makes no sense. Basic plays have a big chance this time, and once they are working the entire team energizes. It's also a good situational spot, on the road following a loss. Generally a team will be energized in that setting. The only problem is we still are above where we should be, in terms of overall record. I'd expect at least one more defeat and this is obviously a potential source.

BTW, along the same topic, Alabama is quietly more vulnerable this year in a national championship game setting. They are allowing a pedestrian 6.7 yards per pass attempt. Only Auburn in 2010 has won a national title in the past decade and beyond with a number like that. Two seasons ago Alabama allowed a phenomenal 4.3. Last season they dropped appreciably, but 6.1 was still upper echelon and more than acceptable. Once you did to 6.7 range you're dealing with Oklahoma Sooner territory, in all the recent seasons within the past decade that the Sooners threatened to win the championship but fell short. Only the 2000 team that upset Florida State had a fantastic pass defense, and it played out in that game. The SEC in general is down markedly in pass defense this year. Only Florida is allowing fewer than 6.5 yards per attempt. Two seasons ago that league had 8 teams below 6.5.

yep and last year...KSU, FSU and ND had Heisman players...and good defenses..

You wanna play with the big dogs you have to get off the porch and fight....

Does Vag Tech have a pulse? Last time I looked, they were one of the best defenses in college football. You score 24 on them, and you have to be pretty confident you can win. The only other teams (Bama and BC) to score more than 24 beat them.
