PFF’s top-rated returning pass rusher is not projected #1 pick James Pearce, Jr. of Tennessee, or Canes phenom Rueben Bain. It's Elijah Alston. The Marshall transfer spoke to the media about his progress in camp:

On his transition to Miami: In the beginning it was a little rough because I didn't know what was going on. I didn't know how everything was going to flow. I didn't know anybody here. I had to remove all my stuff. So the transition was a little rocky.

But once I finally...

On Cam Ward: Our relationship is a little bit different from everybody else. I do not care to talk junk. That's Cam Ward's game. That's what he does with everybody else. Me and Cam, we're buddy-buddy. When we see each other, we wave at each other. In the midst of the play, we'll wave at each other. "Hey, Cam." "Hey, EA." That's just what we do.
great interview. Sounds like a great kid that’s definitely being overlooked here

This part cracked me up

Hit me, baby!

I think he'll see plenty in the 2 deep.
Agreed. Especially the way Guidry likes to drop the DE. I remember Kelly doing it multiple times. EA is really the only one, and perhaps Baron, that will do that effectively. I dont want to see Bain and Messidor dropping into the flat.

At times last year, we had to play Wesley as a Rush OLB in the 3-3-5. This year, we have a wave of upgraded options. Between the depth and [fingers crossed] Mesidor's health, I expect a totally different level of pass rush - not even sacks, necessarily.

I want to see overwhelming pressure with the front 4 enough that our coverages can start to sink into those in-breaking routes. My happiest moment will be when a coverage player undercuts an in-breaking route and re-introduces us to a pick6 celebration.

Malik Bryant can do it as well. We have way better options now.

I’m not going to lie… The offense is the eye candy. But this defense is going to be the “bad b*tch” in the corner that knocks your socks off.

I’m with this….

“Everybody is focused on offense right now, but defense-wise, I like the defense we put together from spring to camp. The defense can be crazy this year. I’ve got high hopes. Everybody else might doubt us or overlook us. But when we step on that field, y'all gonna see what type of defense we got this year. ”

I expect to see a ton of Alston in the UF game. He's a perfect fit to handle a lot of the dinks and dunks we'll see from Billy / Mertz.
