I don`t understand some of you fans. There was a time we were as pathetic as Duke used to be. I can remember when we had 12 to 15,000 in the OB. Then we got good and everything changed. Duke is at that point now and some in here can`t get over the fact that they are just better then we are.Yea, I know we got smoked by what we still think is an inferior team. Maybe just maybe they are better then we are. I love the Canes and know the future will be better. I just think there is no reason to keep bashing Duke when I can remember we were the Duke of the South. Just an old cane giving my two cents.

Duke has had better days than what they're having this year. You do know they were ACC co-champs in 1989, right?

The ACC in 1989 did not have Florida State, Miami, or Virginia Tech in it. It was basically Clemson's league, with an occasional conference title form someone like Maryland, GT or UVA. Duke was also coached by Steve Spurrier, and they won the conference at 8-4. Also, they technically tied UVA for the conference that year, they didn't win it outright.

Well, they didn't play the best two teams in the ACC, arguably the only two teams worth a **** this year and they beat VaTech and Miami who both have 3 ACC losses. That 89 team was a pretty good team (1 conf loss, undefeated at home). Better than this years IMO. But what this years team and their 89 team show is that a good coach makes a world of difference.

We had that many people for the UVA game

1989 Duke lost to 6-4-1 South Carolina by 6, lost to 11-1 Tennessee by 22 in their OOC schedule, and then lost to 9-3 Texas Tech by 28 in their bowl. OOC wins were over 0-11 Northwestern by 10 and 6-5 Army by 6. In the ACC they lost to Co-ACC champ and 9-3 UVA by 21. Their biggest ACC wins were over 10-2 Clemson by 4 and 7-4 GT by 11 and 7-5 NC State by 9. Overall they played 5 bowl teams and were 2-3 against them. Color me unimpressed with them in '89 or this year for that matter, but yes, I agree a good coach makes the world of a difference.

The first game I remember goiing to in the OB, was Duke Beating Nebraska in the 1955 OB game. Yes, they have had better days.

Duke is having their best season in decades. College football is cyclical, and every few years, a team like Duke will rise up and have a good year.

Cutcliff is a very good coach. He has very little pressure on him at Duke, and he has smart players. So its easy for him to build his system and tweak it just the way he wants to. That makes them a better "team" than many teams they will play. I actually think Duke is probably a better "team" that most teams in the ACC. However being a better "team" doesnt mean you have better athletes. It just means they have learned to play well together, and get the best out of what they have. We are not playing like Duke is, even if we may have better individual players. And the problem is, our talent is not SO much better, that we can play sloppy and get away with it. Maybe most years, but not this year. Just ask VT.

I remember when Maryland was a national power, they had some of the best teams in the country in the mid 50's, I believe.
