A source told Canesinsight this afternoon that defensive tackle Gerald Willis is back enrolled in classes at the University of Miami.

In July, Mark Richt announced that the redshirt junior would be taking a leave of absence from the football season and would not compete for the 2017 season. Willis was not enrolled in classes at UM over the summer. He will still sit this season out and is not on the roster, but Willis could have the option of rejoining the team in January with one more year of eligibility.

Willis could technically also enter the draft following the season, as he is eligible to do so, but would be seen as a potential starter in 2018 with the possibility of Kendrick Norton and R.J. McIntosh having big seasons and turning pro as well.

Good, hopefully he recognizes the opportunity and takes advantage of it. If not football, at least the free education.

He let the team down this season. It was his time to shine.

Hard to say he let the team down before 1) you know the reason he left the team and 2) before we know the outcome of the season... just saying

Perfect world he rejoins right after the season finishes and doesn't miss a beat becoming a first stringer on the line

Is this due to personal issues or a business decision?

Good for Willis but he can't be your leader in DT room. If Nort or McIntosh come back in '18 then we can sleep easily.

I hope the young man overcomes what ever the issue is. Glad he is taking classes as that degree and education is real important. If he is able to rejoin next year that would be great

Gerald Willis is 22 right now, if he chooses to come back he'll be 24 should he make it to an NFL roster. Those years count to NFL front offices. If he's not trying to get his degree immediately, then he should work as hard as he can in the classroom, forego college football and try to turn pro. He can always come back to finish his degree, if he wants it.

Unless your draft stock can be dramatically improved (Delaney, D.), coming back to play for free is dumb.
