DT Recruiting

I mentioned this in the WEZ, but I'll say it here too. Schematically, getting Norton back next year is more important for the defense than RJ even though RJ is a better player. If Norton leaves early, with Moten graduating, that'll be our top two nose tackles out the door. We'll only have Ford to play NT with most likely Silvera being second string NT.

At the 3-technique we have Willis and Bethel coming back. With Martin behind those two. Norton coming back prevents us from having to put a true freshman nose on the two deep before he's ready.
Sounds like we will have a juco dt / ng next year. Goldwire perhaps. We will need him prolly if norton goes.

Ford IMO has the ability to play 3 tech also.

I wouldn't be surprised to see DJ Johnson playing on the inside on passing downs at times in the future, like we've seen DJax and Thomas this year and last.

Djax and someone else may play dt on certain downs as well.
One thing I’ll say is, I have more confidence in this staff solving problems goin forward than the previous staffs.

We need a juco who can actually come in and play right away. Not necessarily start, but, be in the rotation with ford and bethel and Willis.

No, he's not. He's listed at 222 at 6'6". Calais Campbell played his senior year in HS at 225ish at 6'8". He'll put more weight on before he arrives and may leave Miami at the same size as Thomas now.

More concerned about the fact that we only have DJax coming off what looks like a significant knee injury, Joe Jackson, Garvin, and DJ Johnson at DE. Rousseau isn't going to be ready physically year 1 and same for Chatfield if he comes in. Neither enroll early.

Maybe Patchan goes back to DE. But that's 3 guys at DE for the spring most likely. Maybe 5 ready for the season. Ideally you have 6 that can play and 7-8 on the roster that are healthy

Agree 100%. Folks are not worried about the DE position but we lose our 2 deep on the left side. Not easy to replace. Sure, you can say that maybe we move over DJax, Garvin, etc to that side but how realistic is that? Right now, as of the spring, it's DJ and Patchan (if he returns) at LDE. That's not very good depth.

Take Patchan off TE and you have Irving and Polendey until the studs enroll in the summer. We're gonna be thin somewhere regardless. Patchan to DE in the spring.. he's gonna get a ton of reps especially with Djack out and no EE coming in. He could take that next step after all the attention from Kool

Rousseau does EE so scratch that concern. Kool will have him ready

He's severely underweight so I wouldn't pencil him in.

Is it known that we're recruiting Goldwire at DT? He's only listed at 285 for being 6'7". That's not a lot of weight for a guy that tall. Not much bigger than Chad.

I think John Henderson played at about 320-325 in the pros (at 6'7"), and I don't believe he was too much smaller at Tennessee either.

Campbell also shirted, you can't expect a kid that size to come in and be thrust into action he needs to fill out. I made no comment as to how much he will weigh his junior or senior season. Kid has all the tools to become a beast but IMO not in his freshman year. If he adds 30 pounds somehow by the time next year rolls around and is in shape than sure but I don't think that happens. But I'm not making declarations just my 2 cents.

Definitely need a JUCO DT on the ready.

DT recruiting is a slam dunk about as often as QBs are. For whatever reason some guys domination on Friday nights dont translate like you think they would. Nesta looks like the real deal but not coming in early is going to have him behind the S&C curve.

Penciling in Willis at this point is about as risky as it gets. I have seen too many of these smoke and fire situations that cause a kid to miss a season to know not to count on him. At this point I think you count on him as much as your counting on RJ or Norton to come back.

I'm just wondering it seems like Miami finds the better players from and around the state of FL, SO when it comes to recruiting DTs for 18' besides Nesta, what other DT prospects might be out in and around FL that might be getting overlooked?? I just wonder behind Nesta in FL, what other 1 or 2 players could be solid additions with Nesta, any names!!

After seeing what this UM team has done these two seasons under CMR and staff, I not doubt what this team will do in the future!!

DJ will be a hybrid DT/DE, Willis, Ford, Bethel, and Nesta!! If UM goes to the JUCO level, he has to be a straight beast, pure stud..

That is not thin especially when you add the freshman being coached up by a guy like coach kool. Not to mention the guys who can slide inside ala djack who has the frame to get up to 290 or so

You honestly have no idea what you’re talking about. If DJack went up to 290 or even close, he’d be a slug. He doesn’t have the frame for that Al Golden Jr.

Jared Goldwire has knee problems! I say pass!

For ’18 DL Cardinal Commit Jared Goldwire, JUCO Path All About Making “Righteous” Choices
Ross ProphaterJuly 30, 2017

The term JUCO often carries a negative connotation. Players land in JUCO for many reasons, but it’s not WHY a player lands in junior college that should be the determining factor of a kid’s worth or their future. Rather that determination should come from HOW they choose to utilize that opportunity to further their goals and aspirations. For Strong Side Defensive End and 2018 Cardinal Commit(#Birdgang18) Jared Goldwire his JUCO path has been the epitome of a player taking full advantage of the JUCO opportunity.

On and off the field, Goldwire has elected to focus on learning how to mature as a player and as a person. TheCrunchZone.com recently caught up with Goldwire to get an update on the defensive lineman commit. In his last semester at Fort Scott C.C. an hour and a half directly south of Kansas City, KS, Goldwire has learned how to become a student of discipline and of faith.

“Just being able to play in the JUCO league I play in, there is a lot of competition and dudes who go off to play college ball somewhere bigger. JUCO’s helped me get a feel to know how it would be playing against dudes who are going D1. I have a lot of friends who play JUCO, or did and they always say it makes you mature faster and I agree with them. JUCO turns you into a man! I had to learn how to find a way to balance college classes with football and social activities and it was a true struggle; first semester especially with it being my first season also. 2nd semester definitely was smoother because of all the trials I went through 1st semester.”

And find a way he did! Finishing last semester with a 3.8 GPA, which currently boosts his cumulative GPA at the moment to a 3.2. He’s working even harder this last semester in the classroom, striving to position himself for success for when he arrives at UofL in January ‘18 for the Spring Semester with some lofty goals ahead. “I’m hoping to have it (cumulative GPA) at a 3.4 by the time I leave Fort Scott. I just want a high enough GPA so I can dual major in business at UofL.”.............

Before Goldwire is to arrive on campus in January he’s still got another football season at Fort Scott to complete. His 2016 campaign “was good,” but it was ultimately cut short of being better as he suffered a torn ACL in early November. Productive nonetheless, he finished his 2016 campaign with 46 tackles, 11.5tfl and 2.5 sacks.

When asked about getting back on the field and what he’s doing to prepare for his final season at Fort Scott C.C. Jared replied, “My stats would’ve been better if I would’ve been able to continue to play I think. This season I want to show I can still move and do the things I used to be able to, but better than before I tore my ACL and also stay positive throughout all aspects of the season.”

With a strong drive and a positive attitude, he continues to rehab relentlessly with the goal to play this upcoming season since having reconstructive surgery the week of Thanksgiving 2016. “My knee is feeling tremendous while doing drills. I’m doing a lot of cardio to try and build back my muscular endurance and currently some field cutting and I’ve been in the weight room. I’ve also been working with people to help better my pass rush, working hips and multiple hand fighting drills.”

Ultimately though it may be Goldwire’s faith in his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that has helped him through one of his toughest times and it’s his faith he used as a beacon to help him keep a positive outlook. Tweeting recently “One of the greatest moments of my life,” Goldwire chose to get baptized, lean on his faith to help him through the fire of his recent trials and tribulations. “Knowing I have the Lord with me each and every day through every circumstance is truly a blessing. I know the Lord’s going to guide me into having a healthy season and a great season as long as I keep praising him and giving him thanks. It was a HUGE moment for me not just mentally, but especially spiritually! I just felt like all the signs were pointing to me getting baptized. I’ve been wanting to get a baptism done, but only if it was the right time. I was praying on it and I felt like God finally wanted me to get the baptism done, so mentally, I’m fine as long as I know the Lord is with me.”

It’s Jared’s faith, positive mindset, trust in the process, maturation as a person and hard work that Goldwire has to thank for his good standing now and the change in scenery to come in just a few shorts months when he arrives on UofL’s campus. “UofL is a great school with great academics, an amazing atmosphere in the city and the future for the football team is tremendous.” “I want the fans to know that I believe I bring a leadership quality, I see myself as an immediate impact player who brings a great run stop ability. I can’t wait to play on Saturdays, bring home an ACC Championship and a College Football Playoff Championship!!!”

Jared Goldwire will be a mid-year player who reports to campus in January and eligible to compete Spring of 2018. You can follow him on Twitter @Baby_Goldwire
