Well there goes that...

The NFL season hasn't started yet, but the Miami Dolphins already have suffered their first defeat.

Florida lawmakers ended their 60-day legislative session on Friday without approving a deal that would have provided taxpayer support for a $350 million dollar upgrade to Sun Life Stadium, according to the Miami Herald.

Had the legislature approved the deal, the people of Miami-Dade county would have voted on a referendum on May 14. The proposed deal would have raised up to $289 million for renovations by raising the Miami-Dade hotel tax from 6 to 7 percent. The Dolphins would have also had a shot at up to $90 million in state sales tax rebates.

The rejected deal all but kills South Florida's hopes of hosting Super Bowl L or Super Bowl LI. The NFL had told the Dolphins that Miami would only be considered as a Super Bowl host if the team had a plan in place to renovate the 26-year-old stadium.

The host cities for Super Bowls L and LI will be voted on by NFL owners on May 21. The 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara is now almost a lock to host Super Bowl L as Miami was the only other competition in the bid to host the NFL's 50th anniversary Super Bowl. The Bay Area hasn't hosted the NFL's championship game since 1985, ironically enough, San Francisco beat Miami in Super Bowl XIX.

Houston is now the most likely candidate to host Super Bowl LI. Whichever city didn't get Super Bowl L was supposed to compete with Houston for the right to host Super Bowl LI, but now Miami appears to out of the running all together.

So big question is does dumbass try to sell now? What effect will that have on Univ of Miami's desire to find another location? Or does dumbass just pony up & pay for it? This is a non-idle topic, meaning he can't just sit on it & do nothing. The Dolphins front office is too retarded to get the ship right by themselves & the stadium fix would've been a huge jump for them in the positive & bought them a large chunk of time. Bad product on the field will continue to cost him big time.

I lost all love I had for the Dolphins when they celebrated the Gators 2008 team on our home field. Effin' traitors.

Please stop this. The canes will never get their own place unless Marlins are sold and moved to another city and some how they can convert that into a football stadium.

You stop it. The Marlins may be sold but they aren't going anywhere. Marlins Park isn't going to be for any other team. The Canes have a better shot of getting their own stadium before any of that happens.

Dolphins owner rips Florida House Speaker over renovation bill

When Florida lawmakers let the legislative session expire Friday before approving a deal that would've provided taxpayer support for $350 million in renovations for Sun Life Stadium, it effectively ended any chance the city had of landing Super Bowl L or Super Bowl LI.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross was predictably unimpressed by the legislature's decision to do nothing. On Saturday, the team issued a statement in which Ross pointed the finger at Speaker of the House Will Weatherford.

“Speaker Weatherford did far more than just deny the people of Miami Dade the right to vote on an issue critical to the future of our local economy,” Ross said (via PFT). “The Speaker singlehandedly put the future of Super Bowls and other big events at risk for Miami Dade and for all of Florida. He put politics before the people and the 4,000 jobs this project would have created for Miami Dade, and that is just wrong. …

“He gave me and many others his word that this legislation would go to the floor of the House for a vote, where I know, and he knows, we had the votes to win by a margin as large as we did in the Senate,” Ross continued. “It's hard to understand why he would stop an election already in process and disenfranchise the 40,000 people who have already voted. I can only assume he felt it was in his political interest to do so. Time will tell if that is the case, but I am certain this decision will follow Speaker Weatherford for many years to come.”

Ross wasn't the only person associated with the Dolphins to take shots at the politicians. Jorge Arrizurieta and H.T. Smith, who co-chaired the team's campaign for a subsidized stadium renovation, released their own statement on the matter (via the Miami Herald).

“By leaving Tallahassee without letting the people of Miami-Dade vote on the modernization of Sun Life Stadium, the Florida House clearly showed our community that they would rather play politics than do the right thing. While the Tallahassee politicians found time to raise the contribution limits for their fundraising, they said they couldn't find time to let the people of Miami-Dade make their voices heard. While they pushed their political agenda, the House leaders refused to support the effort that would create over 4,000 jobs and provide a much-needed boost to our local economy.

“The House put at risk the future of Super Bowls and other major events in Miami, which are so critical to our tourism economy. It's a sad day when Tallahassee gives San Francisco and Houston a victory at the expense of our community.

“This inaction by the Florida House of Representatives is frankly irresponsible and regretful. The most basic responsibility and right a citizen has is the ability to vote. All we asked for was the opportunity to vote to not be denied. Unfortunately, the House chose to deny Miami-Dade residents the right to have the final say on this effort.”

And although public funding may be off the table, there's always this: Ross, who is worth $4.4 billion according to Forbes, could use some of his own money to finance the renovations. (We'd advise against holding your breath waiting for this eventuality.)

Thank the Marlins and their five effing fans! How people down there allowed that disgrace to be built is beyond me.

Good. The billionaire can pony up the dough if he feels stadium renovations are so important.

Beers were 9 dollars at the Spring Game. Got no sympathy for this dude.

If he is to pony up the money for the stadium you can expect the cost of beer to go up to $12 a game. The marlins are a joke and should be sold to another city no body cares about Florida baseball. The only way they would make money is if they moved to the AL East, so that when the yankees and red sox are in town those fans will show up. Coral Gables will never allow a stadium will drive down the price of the homes in the area.

All I care about with stadium renovations is for seats to be moved closer, I don't care about a top on it.

In the weeks ahead, I will do all I can to convince my fellow owners to bring the Super Bowl back to Miami Dade. The Bid Committee has done a tremendous job to give us a great shot, and my only hope is that it is enough to overcome the terrible message Speaker Weatherford has sent to the NFL tonight. In addition, I will continue to do all I can to build a winning team for the people of Miami Dade - Stephen Ross 5/3/13

This says everything you need to know about Ross...as his quote states: "Super Bowl to Miami first...a winning team.."in addition".

What effect will that have on Univ of Miami's desire to find another location?

What makes you think that the University of Miami has a desire in finding a new location? I've never seen any comments from the University to that extent.

This is my feeling, it seems that now would be the perfect time for a long term plan to get our own stadium. I just don't feel that the university (admin + trustees) want it enough to make a long term plan.

if you just woke up, the residents of miami-dade couldnt vote on the marlins deal. the dolphins wanted the county to vote on the stadium money.
