I'm trying to send him this email to voice my displeasure with Coach (NO) D. feel free to read and tell me what you think! anyone who has his email address, please post it.
I am writing this email on behalf of the UM community, students, season ticket holders, and alumni. What has transpired over the last few years with Mark D'onofrio as the defense coordinator at the University of Miami is a disgrace. We went from having one of the best defenses in college football in 2009 to a program that was completely EMBARRASSED by Duke's great offense (insert sarcasm). I am sure I don't have to remind you, but just in case you weren't aware, the defense has given up over well FIVE HUNDRED yards of total offense in five out of the last six games. I don't have to mention last year's debacle when we had the WORST defense in the history of the University of Miami football program. I understand the NCAA investigation has hampered our ability to attract elite talent to Gables. Further, I realize that the talent at UM is not capable of stopping the Florida States of the world at this point. However, giving up 42 points to a BAD Va Tech offense and 48 points to DUKE is unacceptable. There is no way anyone can tell the UM community that we don't have the talent to stop Va Tech but Maryland and Duke do. This is not basketball! Three years is enough time to see that something MUST CHANGE on the defensive side of the ball as things continue to get worse year by year.
President Shalala has always praised the University of Miami as a place for winners and leaders. However, Mark D'onofrio is not an example of this. He continually deflects the blame and places the blame SOLELY on his players. Here is an example from today's press conference when asked about what are the issues on defense.
"If you have one guy not doing his job, they can definitely find you. And that happened the other day. When you have two or three (players making mistakes) you're in trouble. They have to put their eye on their key, play ball, be able to tackle - to be in great position to tackle they have to do what's taught. Guys are not doing their job."
He has made several similar comments in the past (I can email the articles if you like), basically saying that these kids are not good. That is NOT what a leader does: place the blame on 18-20 year old kids. A defense can only execute if lead properly. It is CLEAR that we do NOT have the right man to lead at the DC position.
I am extremely proud to have attended the University of Miami and support our team through thick and thin. However, there comes a time when there are obvious issues and action should be taken. Many former UM defense players, including ones who played under D'onofrio, have asked for a change at DC. While I am not one of the higher-paying donors, I am friends with a few influential donors who have voiced the same concerns over Coach Mark D'nonfrio. I hope you are doing your job by evaluating the situation and thinking about what is best for our school and the UM community as a whole. Thank you for your time.
Go Canes.
