Does anyone else think that employing the Double A-Gap Blitz

while playing a pure Cover 2 zone with 3 Under shell MIGHT enable our D to generate more pressure on the opposing QB? Given the personnel with which Coach O has to operate, I think that this just might do the trick.

Again, there are a lot of ways for us to try to generate pressure and they aren't unknown to any coach. The problem this defense has is getting to 3rd and long. We can't win balanced downs because our players are lost. Play action destroys us and we don't attack run because we're hesitant. If you are consistently stuck in 2nd and 3, you can't play games with the offense. They can play games with you. That's why I'd argue that we keep a small package of stuff like this but otherwise simplify extremely in the balanced situations. It's basically like last year--the ultimate bend but don't break where you're waiting for one third down or the red zone and you employ this type of stuff there.

I think Donofrio sees better athletes and wants to be able to do more (which he can, athletically). Unfortunately until the heads catch up nothing else matters.

Do you mean send 6, split 3 underneath and 2 over the top? That may be a QB's dream, and that's without considering how bad our Safeties have been. You'd need to drop a DE or even a DT (Chickillo inside on 3rd down) back into a middle zone. That would make it more like a Fire-zone blitz:

Send 5
3 underneath
3 over the top

On offense, I surmise we're going to see a lot of that from VTech.

If you send six you're better off running cover 0 because every eligible receiver would be accounted for. Sending six with three underneath zone defenders would place too much stress on those defenders, especially if the blitz doesn't create instant pressure. The hot read off the TE/Slot would be murder.

I will readily admit that I'm not a fan of zone fire blitzes because you're asking D-linemen to drop and cover in space. We have trouble asking our linebackers to cover in space. However, I will say the zone fire is useful when facing a team like KSU that runs zone read option. You're able to give a false read to the QB as he reads the DE, and can cause the play to run into the teeth of the blitz.
