DO we assign a linebacker to spy Kline next week ? If so what scheme would be best around that on defense ?

would be smart to do whatever we have to do to make him a non-factor.

he is their key to a victory or a blow out loss.

I would give the assignment to Eddie Johnson. He's not the most cerebral player, but has the athleticism to stick with him

I would say spy sparingly and situationaly. Running spy is going to mean we have one less man to blitz. This is a team i think we would beat if we ran base 4-3 man with pressure on the backfield. I see us running the zone though and being picked apart with read options, pa passes, and draws and sweeps. I expect a big dsy from kline. Our o has to keep us in it and turnover differential will be the deciding factor.

With the issues we already have in coverage, I wouldn't take another guy out of the scheme. Keep him in the pocket with a controlled rush, maintain gap discipline, and do what Oklahoma did last year; make him beat you with his arm.

I think third down situations would be the best time to use a spy on him. I'd go with either Johnson or Gaines.

Agreed.....spying is stupid. You are essentially playing defense with 10 guys, which opens up holes in your coverage and run protection. Play team defense and it will take care of itself.

I would put in the GT defensive philosophy. I really hope we control the run game as well as we did this week. If we were to spy him I agree with using EJ. You need to keep the best defender in the middle of the field.

I'm not totally familiar with KSU and GT personnel, but win or lose this game should help us with a big divisional game.

He would outrun all of our LBs except for
Maybe buch and he would have an easy time braking our DB tackles. Don't underestimate Kline.

I don't think he'd outrun Perryman. He tracked down Dorsett from behind in the spring game. Any of the LB's with the angle should be able to catch him, but they can't underestimate his speed.

Would be great to hear Lu's take on this. I'm assuming that we will, but I'm also assuming that he's not nearly as effective a passer as he is a runner.

Spying is the most over-ballyhooed infrequently utilized technique mentioned on these boards. It's a waste of time and a waste of a player IMO. It takes him out of the defense and generally if the QB is fairly athletic he gets away from the "spy" anyway. Nobody can "spy" Michael Vick for instance it's a waste of a guy he is gone regardless. Now we might play a fair amount of man-1 free which gives you a free guy at the second level who can help contain the quarterback but this is a defense in and unto itself where that free guy has some leeway to roam. Personally, I imagine we'll be very predictable in early down and distance--probably a lot of cover 3 to give us an 8 man front while preventing big plays from the gross errors we had in man coverage. Then if we get to third down you'll see a bit more variety be it tampa 2 or zone blitzes.

If I'm D'Onofrio priority #1 is to avoid explosion plays and I suspect that means we'll minimize man coverage in which our linebackers are horrifically lost.
