Did Coley ever play at the college level?

I saw nothing in his bio that said he played at FSU.

Not a criticism at all, more and more outstanding coaches never played at the colllege level. Fisch, Weis (I'll give him credit for being outstanding when he won championships at NE), and others.

Just an observation, and a question about Coley.

Fisch was a tennis guy and never actually played the sport. Coley at least played in HS. But you are really starting to see more and more guys who grow up just to coach. Something about the cerebral side that attracts them.

I once put a list together after a back and forth with CanesBros or one of those Grassy guys who said I wasn't allowed to break down film or critique coaches (this was before the internetz had accepted Patrick Nix was the bottom of the barrel) because I hadn't played at a high enough level. Basically, the list showed a freakish % of the greatest of all time coaches - from Paul Brown and Bill Walsh to modern day guys like Belichik to out of nowhere guys like Marv Levy - were either pretty low level college players or didn't play at all. I'll try to find the list.

It helps to have played the game a bit, I think. I wouldn't know certain things about coverages and such if I had never played. But, I'm not sure being an excellent player that goes on to play at the highest levels is as necessary as many seem to think. Football is about understanding how pieces work together within a finite area and against another group of pieces that are supposed to work together.

This is all true, but there is a downside (not really a downside more like a perception problem). I've had older players who, have knocked some coaches due to their lack of playing experience. But I believe that is dying with more and more guys working their way up the ranks in the coaching world.

I will say this about Coley, he has the energy and bravodo to coach at UM. I am hoping he also has the humility to know he still needs to attend coaching clinics and reach out to stronger offensive minds that AG can put him in contact with. Go spend a few weeks with fisch in jax , and also the patriots. Heck even pete carrol out in seattle. Because up until this point his offensive mind has been influenced only stints at FIU and FSU both if whom have not really set the world on fire with offensive brilliance. FSu wins with better players not better offensive schemes that out coach thier opponents.

Spending time with fisch, carrol, and beilichi (sp) will help fisch better understand the play book and TE usage within the scheme as well as add some patriot influences.

I also think it will help bolster image with QB recruits who will see him learning from the best, then bringing it back to UM.

Go Canes

I don't understand why you're including Carroll in this... He's known as a defensive coach, not offense.

What they should do is really take advantage of the local connection with the Dolphins. Makes more sense to me than flying up to Seattle to spend time with a coach who specializes in defense.

There aren't coaching clinics for college guys. But every single college coach visits with pro guys. He's been to all those places, even Indy a couple years ago.

Mark "the human buffet line" Mangino didn't play college ball either. There are quite a few coaches that didn't play that turned out to be pretty good coaches. It's all about studying the game.

Coley was a backup Qb at Miami High when I went there. He backed up Wilkie Perez or Kendall James if I remember correctly. Barely saw the field.

Those were the days. LOL.

Mike Leach
Todd Haley
Charlie Weis
Jedd Fisch

Plus a bunch of others that never played higher than high school (Paul Johnson, David Cutcliffe).

Its something about those offensive guys...I think hollyhood is on to something...its the cerebral part of the game they are into...like a life size chess game with an infinite number of variables.

I think they are less coaches and more coordinator, if you know what I mean.

Or they always liked football, but just didnt have the physical ability to play at a high level. Someone like Fisch might have been athletic enough to play tennis, but he is rather on the small side.

Belichick is defensive guy as well. Could learn from McDaniels though

Yeah, but he did take charge of the offense for a little while. At least he has that...
