2026 Derrek Cooper RB/ATH from Chaminade

Given how RBs will (and should) portal out if they aren't receiving RB2 workload by their Jr year (and should enter draft if they are draftable after Jr season) I would be shocked if we didn't sign 2 RBs every HS class. It just makes way more sense. There should be ZERO expectation for any HS Recruit at RB to stick around on this team past a RS So season unless they are LOCK for RB2 or better type of workload. Simple as that.

2 HS Rbs every year.

Agreed that we need to sign 2 HS RBs every year. But we didn't sign 2 RBs this 2025 class. Now we have 4 scholarship RBs (Lyle, Fletcher, Pringle, CWH). That's not enough. Short-sighted decision that, per numerous @DMoney posts, was apparently the staff's "plan" all along.

The plan made sense if they were confident one of Allen/CJjr were staying. Maybe they thought one of them would be ahead and worth keeping or something... I think we need to bring in another RB now, but it's also easier to say after the fact and use it as evidence for why we should bring in 2 going forward. I don't view it as all that bad of a move tbh. Plus remember that you don't want to bring guys in just to bring them in, and once you kinda stop prioritizing a guy its much harder to add them back later.

Also currently the 85 limit is also still in place I believe, and we are currently at the Limit I'm pretty sure. Not sure when it techically moves to 105 scholarships.... But thats an important consideration too. As well as the fact they were obviously trying to flip many other top HS targets which would have eaten into the figure as well (and they obviously knew regardless they were going to have to make some big portal additions regardless how HS classes finished).

No. That plan only makes sense if they were confident both of them were staying, and certain one of them was staying. And some of us were saying this BEFORE anyone transferred (notwithstanding all the noise that 1 RB was the plan).

No I disagree, you don't have to be confident both were staying at aCalifornia.
You made a correct observation: take 2 RBs every year. But you followed that up saying it wasn't a mistake not to take 2 THIS SEASON. Notwithstanding the fact this is EXACTLY why you take 2 every season.

Please recognize you are now arguing against your own position.

Going forward Scholarship limits have changed. Plans can change during the season when recruitments are already well under way.

I'll clarify - Take 2 GOOD Rbs. Not just 1 Good Rb and 1 anybody you can possibly get just to satisfy getting 2 HS RBs...

I am sorry I responded to you in agreement. Whatever your point is, you are right.

@Rellyrell, I now hear Jimmy, brother.

Get this kid locked up with NIL. Gotta keep the best home.
We've missed out on a good rb prospect in Riley and what was trending to be a major player pre injury in Baxter the cycle before. Cooper looks to be close to Baxter caliber, a home run hitter. We need that badly.

I thought the plan made sense with the consideration they had convinced themselves at CJJ and Ajay weren’t going anywhere.

They should have expected at least Ajay would leave based on drop off in utilization, if not bof em.

@DMoney with the first listing of key recruits in the 26 recruiting cycle in the 1/31 Bank.

Derek Cooper (Chaminade) and Calvin Russell (Northwestern) are obviously major targets locally on offense.

ESPN did top prospect comparisions with college comps

RB: Derrek Cooper

ESPN Junior 300 rank: 18

Comp: Ollie Gordon II, Oklahoma State

Gordon and Cooper are gallopers with a style reminiscent of Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric ****erson -- tall, upright with a high leg drive. Both need to continue to focus on their level. But upon contact, both Cooper and Gordon rarely get knocked off their feet because of their lower body strength and ability to square up and lower their shoulders. They can sneak through tight creases despite their size, yet both have very impressive max speeds when they get to the second level on a straight line. Bigger backs need to be nimble on their feet and display contact balance while continuing to fall forward. Both Cooper and Gordon check those boxes.
