Safety Deon Bush says he still "can't really" put a percentage on how close he is to full strength coming off summer hernia surgery.

But with a couple of games now under his belt he says "You know, I'm really progressing each week, am getting better. I'm feeling good each week.

"I have to still keep on progressing."

How tough has it been mentally for him having to sit out and rehab much of the fall?

"It's pretty tough, but I'm just fighting, trying to get better each day," Bush said "It's in the past right now. I am just looking forward to what I can do in the future right now."

With a physical Georgia Tech team up next, the Canes will need a healthier Bush and his physicality on the field.

"They have a great running game," Bush said. "They're a high run percentage team. We just have to be disciplined. They're just a great team."

Bush says after facing the Yellow Jackets last year as a freshman "I have a better clue of what I'm expecting to see. I have a game under my belt playing against them already, and that helps a lot."

Bush is asked what would make this a successful game for the defense. His response: "Whatever it takes to win. That's what we have to do."

What is the team's approach for the ACC opener?

"Every game is a must win," Bush said. "We take that attitude. We're preparing the same way. Obviously there's a little more at stake, but we still have to prepare the same way."

Bush said the team isn't looking ahead at anything more than the upcoming opponent.

"We're just taking it one game at a time," he said.

I feel bad for him. Knowing what your body should do and at the same time won't let you do... I know it's gotta be mentally tough for him. He will be alright though.

He looked more like his old self in the USF game. You could tell he wasn't right against SSU.

I just have a feeling we are not going to see the real Deon Bush at all this year. I think he will be a quality backup to AJ, RJ, and KC. But next year he will be 100%, have all the jitters and cobwebs out and come back with RJ to form a crazy S tandem. JMO but he just seems to timid and fearful. Ask Derrick Rose. When your not in it mentally, it doesnt matter how ur body feels. You just not in it.

I agree with your first line, but completely disagree with "timid and fearful". He's just not anywhere near 100%.

It's tough to get healthy from an injury like that when you are out there banging heads. He probably won't get healthy until the offseason unfortunately.

Like another poster said, I don't think he's timid or fearful. Having that surgery, spending ALOT of time away from training, conditioning, practicing is going to take a toll on ANY athletes game. Especially since Deon isn't 100 percent yet, he probably won't say it, but I'm sure he's still has a little discomfort/pain in that area as well. Just a combination of things affecting how he would normally play. Takes time.

agreed, with the down time, i'm sure he's had too much time to think about his father. anything we can get from him would be good. thankfully, our safeties have done an adequate job.
