Demetrius Freeney, a recent cornerback commitment from the College of San Mateo (JUCO) in California, is enrolling at the University of Miami this week. Freeney was a guest on the latest CanesInSight podcast where he discussed his decision to join Miami, the challenges he anticipates, and the transition he expects to make.
With an array of schools to pick from, Freeney highlighted comfort and scheme fit as the main reasons for committing to Miami. The support he found from Miami head coach Mario Cristobal and defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae was instrumental. "They just knocked it off. I had great conversations with them throughout the whole visit," Freeney said. "I felt like I can trust them with me only having three years of eligibility left to get me to where I want to go and develop me into the best corner I can be."
The former quarterback turned cornerback shared his thoughts on transitioning to a new environment. Despite the contrasting vibes of laid-back California and the fast-paced life in Miami, Freeney seemed excited about the prospect. "Wherever I went it was going to be a change in scenery for sure. I'm the type of person to like to adapt to where I'm at so I feel like it'll be an easy transition," he said confidently.
Freeney's previous experience as a quarterback has given him valuable insights into the intricacies of the game. He highlighted the benefits of understanding personal cues, route recognition, and overall scheme from his days as a quarterback, which he said helps him play faster and be more confident as a cornerback.
Reflecting on the Hurricanes' defensive scheme, Freeney pointed to his strong football knowledge, which will play a significant role in their zone concepts. "They know that I'm very knowledgeable when it comes to football... they feel like I can do a great job at that and then they also run the 4-2-5 so there's five DBs out there, a lot of opportunity with a lot of talented guys in that room," he said.
When asked about his decision to choose Miami over other schools, Freeney mentioned his comfort with the university and the strength of his relationships with the coaching staff. Freeney stated, "Like I said, it was a bunch of great schools, it was just I and my dad just went off fit and where I felt more comfortable."
As he prepares to fly out to Miami for the Summer B term, Freeney has a message for the Hurricanes' fans: "I just want all the fans to get to Hard Rock and get that thing rocking because coach Cristobal is doing something great and... fill the seats. That's my message."
