There has been a debate back and forth about who's defense philosophy and scheme are being run at Miami.

AG bio from UVA

Come to find out AG was the one that brought the 3-4 scheme to UVA in 2001 as the LB Coach, which is very telling.

I did some digging an found 2003 game of UVA vs Fresno ST and another game of UVA vs Miami from the same time period on almost every snap the DB's are playing off the ball and balling out. This is AG's style of play from day one, this scheme at its best has only 18th, it was not built for speed or deception by disguising blitzs even back then he telegraphed what he was going to do. Watch the game film.

I now more than ever realize UM needs a new DC that brings a different philosophy that works for S.fla kids capitalizing on our speed. This can be done within a 3-4 scheme just not AG's current scheme as many posters have stated. An this change will have to be forced on AG by the administration this year after signing day in the next few weeks if AG ends up staying at Miami after this week.

Some pretty good points. Offenses are much more creative nowadays which is part of the reason why this type of scheme struggles. Just ask Al Groh.

As sit down in the comforts of my home on a cold fall/winter morning, I often wonder, do Al and D'Onoffrio even watch the game of football outside of scouting their own team?

I don't understand how you can't see the success other teams have on Defense by DICTATING to the offense.

"Look.....goly G, Auburn sure is kicking the **** out of the Seminoles right now. I think we should use the exact opposite scheme, sit back and wait for them to make a mistake. Make sure we keep the quarterback in the pocket, stiffen up in the redzone and see if they **** up first".

The problem with the scheme is that it won't win consistently against good teams. It is predicated on the other team making an unforced error. When you play good teams they make very few unforced errors.

You wanna win against the good teams on D. You gotta force the action.

It has always been obvious that this is all on Golden. This is his defense. I have to think that the reason D'Onofrio is his partner in crime and is untouchable (other than the BFF necklace they surely each have halves of) is because Al knows that he doesn't have to worry about some hotshot DC challenging what he feels is an effective scheme and philosophy and changing things.

This will ultimately be his downfall...Al needs to throw in the towel or his defense will run him out of a job. Football is an ever changing game...offenses have morphed into a totally different animal while Al chooses to stick with a dinosaur of a scheme.

I hope that Golden will realize that his stubbornness will ultimately lead to his failure. I don't believe that he will, though. If it were me in that position, sure it may be hard to accept, but I deal with things like that every day in my career...sometimes my way actually isn't the best way.

Al needs to scrap this dinosaur and send D'Onofrio to every corner of the country to study the spread. Have him sit down with as many coaches as possible this offseason. Bring in some spread gurus as special consultants so D'Onofrio and Golden can learn what these offenses are trying to do, **** I don't know. Something.

I could keep going but it is pointless, because past experience shows that there will be no change and we will once again watch our offense sit on the sidelong as the opposition pushes our defense's **** in over and over and over and over and over again. Ugh I hate this stupid piece of **** defense, especially watching our defensive linemen trying to maintain gap integrity when they should be planting the qb on his ****.

Induce vomiting.

I agree that we should scheme to match south florida talent, but to be fair in our hay day we didn't disguise blitzes or play with deception. We played straight up and got pressure with 4 guys. I would like to see more man and less playing off the ball though.

Check out this article from when Golden was hired.
http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/2010-12-14/sports/fl-miami-hurricanes-al-golden-offense20101214_1_al-golden-linebackers-coach-linemen-and-four-linebackers

Kind of weird to read some of the quotes.
The Hurricanes' base defense will be a 4-3, but will shift some to three linemen and four linebackers to counter the growing number of spread offenses, Golden said.

"You have to be flexible," he said. "The teams that have had the best success defensively are teams that can go in and out of an even and off front with great ease."

.Tom O'Brien, now the head coach at North Carolina State, said Tuesday that Golden was the first assistant he hired at Boston College.

"On defense, he likes to be very aggressive," O'Brien said. "He likes to try to dictate to the offense, not have the offense dictate to him what is going to happen."

Golden's aggressiveness on both sides of the ball his first season at Miami will depend on what he sees in his players.

"You have to play the game you need to play," Groh said. "You want to make sure what you do is sound, that your players are never at disadvantage leverage-wise or numbers-wise. I'm sure he'll be a strong practitioner of that."

Honestly I like a lot of what I hear in that initial press conference. Maybe he will get more aggressive next year since we will have more talent on D? One can hope.....

There's a reason he's only 1-12 vs teams with 8+ wins.

Good teams don't beat themselves. Golden's best wins in his career are against a couple of the worst teams UF and Ohio State have fielded in a decade and a couple of wins against mediocre ACC teams.

This man is a loser.

Exactly. Look what it took for us to beat the turds. They made so many unforced errors. Yes we did force some turnovers but Driskell was atrocious and gave us everything we wanted.

Let's not forget the kid that should have been a cane VH III that stepped out of bounds on an int return or we surely would have lost that game too.

This D scheme will not stop any team that is coached by a good OC, not without some serious schematic restructuring.

Aggressive is a vague term that every single DC uses as a tag word.

Two gap systems can easily be described as aggressive.

Goldens problem is he runs a system 3 generations removed from its creators, that he hasn't adapted to modern football offense, personnel, and his own players. In addition, it feels like they don't fully have command of the system itself.

Same people in charge.

Same scheme.

Some of you mother****ers need to get a grip on that and lower your expectations

My expectations for Golden and Doritos is that they peaked this year at 9 wins with the easiest schedule we've ever seen and that it's only downhill from here.

He'll get two more years because he "stayed through the investigation." Even though he really just extorted the university for a fatter contract.

Who is debating this?

Everyone should know this is Al's and has been from Day 1. Golden and D'O believe in what we are running, somehow.

I am pretty much right there with you but I think we will hover in this area rather than go downhill.

Our schedule will get slightly harder (I think) but I think we will get more talented across the board.

Just frustrating altogether, and then he comes on the radio defending the defense throwing out statistics that favor his argument while neglecting others
