I constantly have this fight with friend an fellow fans. How long do you give coach D to turn our defense back to what it was? I always said he has till his first full reqruiting freshman are going into senior year. I feel he has till end of the 2014 season.

This year. 3 years is plenty of time for coaches to flip a roster and get things going in the right direction. If we're not top 40 this year, he should be told to go **** off and die under a bridge.

Spoiler alert: he's going to die under a bridge

The Defense is the main reason why we're not rated higher in the preseason polls. I know preseason rankings don't count, but it does give some sort of viewpoint on how people see your team... I'm not expecting any miracles this season, but I definitely expect a better product on the field.

Coach Dorito has done such a good job of deflecting blame and giving excuses that most now have no expectations for this defense. Dude gets paid 6 figures for a reason, he needs to figure out a way to get more out of his group if he cant he needs to be fired. I know Golden will have hard time doing this but last year with the worse defense in acc is just unacceptable no matter the excuses.

Has he done it or the fans have done it?

I agree, 3 years is enough.

Here is the funny part, the defense could improve and it has nothing to do with coaching.

Porter, Pierre and Robinson are all healthy (knock on wood) and experienced elder statesmen at DT. We now have a ton of kids with experience who were playing as freshman (Bush, Howard, McCord, Moore, Kirby, Crawford, Jenkins etc.) or for the first time on defense, these kids are also bigger and stronger.

Last year we were 80th in scoring defense at 30.50 PPG, which makes you vomit. If #40 last year is what you want, that is USC with 24.31 PPG (which isn't great). I believe if we are healthy, the elder experienced players and the weak schedule is enough to drop us 5 PPG.

The best defense is a good offense? Maybe we should take long drives, slow..... Defense on the field less...

I'm not sure if you intended to make the point that you made. But, it is correct in any case. D'Onofrio isn't going to be a better DC this year. He will have a lot more to work with and an easier schedule. I expect the results to be a lot better. I'm not sure any college DC could have done much with what we had available to put on the field last year.

If you read the first two lines, that is part of the point I am trying to make.

Sometimes in life things (outside your control) make your life easier.

- Easier Schedule, and
- Experienced, stronger and healthy players

Somehow this guy had success at Temple: either it was pure luck, Al coached the D, or he can actually coach or some combination.

I am a believer in the defensive performance (18th Ranked D v. 80th Ranked D) the first two years here was the result of many variables and simply just not Coach D is a terrible coach.

One of the reasons I gave him such a long time to fix it was because of the variables. Being left with nothing, kids leaving early, our schedule hasnt been an easy one, the fact that this season is an easier schedule before it turns to a little harder the following year. I gave him till next season knowing this season was an easier schedule and I dont want to live on both sides of the sword by saying oh hard schedule not all his fault but then turn around and say man he has done a great job with our defense playing lesser talent.

I fully admit I am not a football scientist, I am not an expert and I don't hold a PHD in coaching. I have no way of knowing or dissecting the specific causes of blame (i.e. 43% coaching, 25% youth etc.). While I am not a fan of the coach, I am a big fan of Al. If this is the guy he wants to ride with, then I trust him.

I just really hate the mob of people that hate him for the following reasons:

1. RS was a great DC,
2. I saw everything I needed to see at Maryland,
3. Total D is what matters, and
4. Youth and Inexperience is just an excuse.

I think we are in almost total agreement.
