Defense: pre snap confusion

There are a very high number of plays each game where our back seven is thoroughly confused pre snap. Things I routinely see: uncovered receivers, players still trying to figure out who to cover as the ball is snapped, players frantically yelling at other players to get here or there (sometimes the other player is clearly not listening), getting into position very late or not at all as the ball is snapped, the wrong player picking up a receiver because they realize no one else is, so on and so forth. In general the back 7 on many plays is clearly confused and not lined up on time or correctly.

Forget the myriad other problems with our defense. If I was the coach I would start by focusing solely on correcting this problem. If the back seven is confused, late to get in position or our of position when the ball is snapped, the odds go up astronomically that the offense will have a successful play. This is on coaching. Coaches can get pee wee football players lined up before the snap. If our guys are confused with whatever they are currently being taught, change it. You have to. Do whatever it takes to eliminate this problem. Simplify things, go with a totally different defenese, whatever it takes. We'll never have success on defense if this isn't fixed.

Everytime I see the other team go in motion, I 100% believe we have no clue what's going on. Most of the time it's just eye candy and it confuses our guys 99.9% of the time feels like. Does the D even watch film?

I routinely see guys outta position or 2-3 guys covering one guy while someone is running WIDE open. There seems to be a lack of focus and communication. Oh, and we take HORRIBLE angles on plays. I swear it feels like guys purposely get outta position to make what should be a routine play.

If you're a safety or a corner in HS or the portal, Miami should look very enticing. Immediate playing time should be a great sell.

Why would a top secondary player won’t to come play in what looks like a dysfunctional defensive room?

Even with playing time that’s not enticing. It’s the exact opposite it is going to scare away a lot of talent.

We’ve had issues adjusting to motion since USF. They threw for 300, mostly because if they had one man moving before the snap of the ball, we assumed he was running off the field.
Actually that started at UF, they utilized Wilson like that and went away from it. My bud next to me at the game was wondering why they went away from it because he said our guys were getting caught in the “wash”. But Billy is mensa candidate. Frustrating to say the least.

Semper Canes!!!

The communication in the back 7 is terrible. Nobody knows who's supposed to cover who as soon as receivers go in motion or cross in front of each other. Typically there's a wide open player because two or three of our guys cover one of theirs and leave another one wide open.

The defense has completely fallen apart and we dont seem to know our rules or it is not schematically sound, its the same issues from VT game and they never seem to get fixed. Alignment, lining up, player regression, player confusion, drop off in talent, talent infusion seems to be missing, all of the above seems to be exposed.

Motion confusing us pre-snap...leading to a lot of very out of position players post-snap and leaving large portions of green open on the field.

Even your rudimentary ESPN analysis is identifying this during the bumpers. Can't tell you how many times I heard them saying we are just incredibly poorly coached on defense. lay persons can see this.

They’re poorly coached

The Duke game it looked like a Chinese fire drill at times and yesterday vs. GT at least 2 times and maybe more GT had an uncovered receiver out wide and someone had to be told at the last second to get out there.

There was a play yesterday where one of our DBs was on the boundary side with no one (offense or defense) outside of him. He was pointing to the outside like there were players lined up. No idea what he was pointing at or communicating. This was post motion where two DBs looked to be confused as to who should follow. What are they being taught during the week and how could it be that confusing.

This is precisely why our defense sucks, far more than any other reason. Guidry needed to dumb this **** down 5 games ago.

This is the best post game take.

It’s not just in the passing game. Teams are doing the same thing with motion to get confusion in the run defense. Getting out leveraged, missed run fits or assignments etc etc.

It’s not just motion. Trades and shifts are absolutely killing us. We can’t identify the strength and we out leverage ourself on every play.

This entirely falls on defensive staff

So why is it dysfunctional then? Is it ALL coaching? So players have no accountability? I ask these in all seriousness.

I have the same questions. I don’t study film so I also wonder is it coaching, scheme, player IQ, player skill or all of the above.

Would love to have the media grill Guidry with questions on how he allows a team with no threat to throw run for 300 yards.

We're on the same page there

It’s on film for several games now. All the opposing team has to do is run a man in motion late in the snap count and its mass confusion on our side. On the last play of the game a WR went out late to the right side of field. No one followed him. Finally as they were about to snap the ball Kiko ran over as fast as he could. And guess what side they ran the ball to? Just amateur hour man.
