I’d imagine it was fairly serious or he wouldn’t be committing during the summer a year and a half before he would sign.

Dead period doesn't stop a kid from visiting campus on his own. There is just no in person contact with the coaches allowed. Coaches are allowed to call tho. So he could be on campus and still speak with the coaches.
