In a media availability session today, cornerback Daryl Porter Jr. had much to share about the current dynamics of the team, his own performance this season, and what to expect in the upcoming Temple game.
Long-time Friendship with Jaden Davis
Asked about their previous interactions in Broward County during their high school years, Porter spoke about his long friendship between himself and Jaden Davis.
"Actually, me and Jaden Davis have been playing since we were about six years old; that's when we first met, playing seven on seven. So, we go way back," Porter said. "He's a very technical, gifted athlete, so I already knew about him before he even came in and played for the University of Miami."
Jaden Davis's Quick Adaptation to the System
Davis arrived at the University of Miami over the summer, but according to Porter, his previous experience made his transition smooth. "I already knew what type of a caliber player he was. He already played four years; he was a veteran, played a lot of football at Oklahoma. So, I knew he would be ready by the time he got here," he noted.
Personal Performance and Progress
When questioned about his own performance this season, Porter gave a self-assured answer. "Personally, I think I've been playing very well. I've been very confident in my game, and that comes with watching film, knowing what to do, making sure coach gives you what you need to be successful in this defense," Porter articulated.
Facing Temple's QB EJ Warner
The cornerback also spoke about the upcoming challenge posed by Temple's quarterback, EJ Warner. "He has a very strong arm. I think he has a lot of playmakers around him that can make plays, so we'll be ready when the time comes," Porter assured.
Lessons and Adaptations from the Past Year
Porter was also asked about the improvements he had observed in himself and the team as a whole over the past year. "Just playing fast. Defense is probably way easier from last year; everybody knows what to do now. We're playing fast, we're playing physical, and we're making sure everybody is on point," he responded.
Preparing the Young Team for Their First Road Game
Porter also provided some sage advice to the younger players for their first road game. "Not too high, not too low. Going into another stadium might be a little different for the young guys, but to the older guys, it's just another game. Just do your job and make plays," he advised.
