First-year Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson shed light on fall camp, offering a peek into the offense’s first week of practice.
Opening up about the early days of the camp, Dawson said, "It's pretty typical. Good and bad with no pads on the first two days. Honestly, it's tough, especially up front to sustain blocks when you don't have pads on." However, the excitement remains palpable as he's "eager to put pads on." He’s optimistic, noting, “We're competing. We got guys that are straining. We got a long way to go, but very pleased right now at the four practices."
Dawson was forthright. "Right after week one, day to day, you have a good day, you'll move up," he explained. Emphasizing the competitive nature of the team, he said, “Everything is judged. Effort's judged. Knowing what you need to know is judged. We got competition across the board."
Discussing the wide receiver position, he stated, "I would anticipate a lot of rotation. We don't have a guy that's returning with 100 receptions. Let’s see who can play when I turn the lights on." When asked about the receivers, he detailed, “Last two days, we made a little emphasis to stretch the field. Those plays take time. We're not where we need to be with that.”
Speaking about backup quarterbacks Jacurri Brown and Emory Williams, Dawson offered insights, saying, “That’s a really good question because those two guys have been extremely consistent for the four practices. They've made huge strides since I've been here." He also highlighted their camaraderie, noting, “The best part about both of them is they root for each other."
On the topic of offensive line strength, Dawson elaborated, "If those five can play the whole season, you better have eight to ten ready. Right now, I think we have the bodies that at the end of camp we would feel good about."
On Isaiah Horton: "He's shown some flashes. This kid's extremely talented, but it ain't all about that either," Dawson shared. Emphasizing the need for consistency, he added, "Consistency is what's going to win with him over time."
