If the number of spots to be filled ends in "-teen", then it's an uphill battle no matter if the final number is 13 or 15.

It's just tough on anyone who bought a specific name-numbered jersey...

My view is that if Lucas brings in any of the experienced guys rumored to be assistant coaches (Mike Brey, Bruiser Flint), that will bode well for his time here. Definitely would provide him with a voice or voices with experience to lean on in crunch time at least at the beginning.

I hope that was part of why the admin picked him, not a ton of faith in that regard, but it’s crucial he has a coach who’s coached in big moments on his bench. Juwan Howard did that with Phil Martelli. Obviously it didn’t work out long term for Howard, but he started extremely well.

Howard also followed a guy in Beilein that had the machine rolling, in an era where you could count on most of your roster returning year to year. Different time now.

Bring in a guy like Howard as a bench enforcer. Anyone gets out of hand, players, other teams, officials, fans -- he'll get after them.
