Coley interview in on WQAM

How good can the offense be? Feeling great right now. Worked with a lot of backup guys this spring. As good as a lot of other teams 1st team guys. Builds up good competition come fall camp. The staff feels great. Big athletic group up front.

What do you look for in the Spring Game? Want to see skill position guys win 1-on1’s. Want to see guys step up and make plays. “I got better” feeling. Big runs out of the backfield. Biggest thing if that we want explosive plays. Want to attack teams vertically down the field (deep ball, intermediate and YAC, or designed run into space).

Compare E.J. Manuel to Stephen Morris: Morris touch on the ball and speed on the motion, deliver of a nice lob, exceptional. Extremely accurate. Can drive the ball and make all the throws on the field. EJ has worked to get there with that (wasn’t natural like SM). Worked on mechanics to have the arm to compete at the next level. More of a “throw the ball as far as you can” (which Stephen also can do), but SM can also throw a 20 yard comeback. Saw it 1st practice and said “wow.”

Guys to keep an eye on: Rundown of everyone – Danny Isadora (really stepped up. Finished spring strong), the whole OL unit have blended really well. Bunche is strong, smart, reps 225lbs 36 times and applies it on the field. Will see an intelligent powerful line tomorrow. Everyone knows how great Duke is. Crawford has been a big eye opener this spring. He is the CLEAR #2 running back. Does so much for the team. “He is a football player man.” Cannot put enough of his plate, learns it all. R. Scott is big, strong, twitchy. Makes guys misses on short, intermediate routes – can bring it to the house.

On Herb Waters: He plays like a “cat.” Great balance. Home run speed. Made catches yesterday in the middle in traffic, got skinny. Makes explosive plays. Very excited about him.

On the TE’s: Big, strong, athletic group. Big men. Girth on the edges that you can control rush backers, and they can also come block inside guys (DTs). Can flex them out to the slot or outside WR, and they can run some of the WR plays.

What makes a good recruiter (Joe discusses his rep as a monster recruiting)? Coley knows the lay of the land, has high school coaching connections since he is from Miami. If you put the time in and work it – if you understand the kid and the parents – who are not just a guy doing his jib, you are there for the kid whether he comes or not. Process is all about the players. It’s not about us. How can we get them better? Make them the ambassadors of the program. Huge on building relationships.

Talent in Dade/Broward this year? South of Lake Okeechobee is where Coley wants to recruit. It’s a great year – but thinks that every year. Best football in the country in S. Fl.

On the backup QB battle: Wants to see what happens tomorrow. Guys working hard, competing. All great kids and teammates. Getting themselves better. Compile stats every practice, look at the tapes and see who has control of that spot. Always preparing to play.

Maaaan, Bunche is our 6th OL lulz. He'd be starting on all teams that aren't Alabama. We're gonna do some things on offense this year.

Also, I slept on Herb coming into last year, not again.

I'm excited to see Crawford get an extended role. I'm not of the mind that you need a speed guy and a power guy at RB. Why can't you have two speed/shifty guys? They're chasing Duke around all day, then ****, they gotta chase Crawford around all day too.

The Morris/Manual comparison really surprised me when I heard it. He focused on Morris's touch, variety of throws and accuracy-- areas that Morris has struggled with at times. Hopefully this is part of his evolution as a quarterback.

Every time Coley gets interviewed, the first thing he mentions is the size and athleticism of the offensive line. I expect this offense to look a lot different than FSU's because of the disparity in pass blocking ability. Trickett's offensive line (aside from Watson) was a small, athletic unit built for zone-blocking. As a result, FSU's passing offense relied on a lot of easy passes and quick hitters. IMO, Coley's Miami offense will have longer-developing routes.

I'm just a fan, but I think I mentioned I got to work with Herb at a camp once. I am telling you, this kid just has it. The intangibles. He's vocal, a leader type, wants reps. All the reps, lol. He's going to have a great career here, IMHO.

I really like our talent on offense, if Morris can become a little more consistent we should be able to put points up against anybody.

Duke & D. Craw are 1 & 2. But I have a feeling that we have some guys even behind them that will raise some eyebrows. Dillard came in way our of expected Miami RB shape, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him get a little stronger and be a short yardage nightmare in the future. Obviously needs to work on his pass protection, evidence by Chip Brierre's video. OT Clements if he can stay healthy is more than serviceable. Then you bring in the Bus Edwards and Corn Elder. I think the lack of knowledge and visibility on the out of state guys is clouding our vision a bit. Edwards is a beast, and Elder has the goods, just needs to add 20-25 lbs. After a redshirt year, I see Corn developing into the next Dallas Crawford. Quick learner with quick feet and can do it all. Yearby and the next round will continue the skyward trend. Not sleeping on these guys.

From your keypad to God's laptop.

Our offense should be dynamic and explosive next season, I'm really excited to see Morris build off the success of last year and continue to develop and has been pointed out the OL is the best unit on the football team. We need to blow teams off the line upfront and set the tone with the running game more this year.

Really curious what the deal is with Beau Sandland. We haven't heard much.

I think Sandland's arrival, along with Dobard, has made the other guys step their game up. I've seen the coaches praise all of the TE's. And I think we'll see a good bit of heavy sets with 2 and 3 TE's. Especially in short yardage.

Every interview Coley does he emphasizes vertical attack and explosive plays. I can't believe people still wonder what kind of an offense we will run with Coley.
I've also noticed he always sounds down right giddy like a poor guy who just inherited a fortune.

How big were the rest of FSU's OL compared to Miami's?
