Miami Hurricanes Inaugural Star-Studded Paradise Camp a Success
Some really good stuff from Coach Richt, it was a lengthy article so I'm not going quote the whole thing, just some of the ones that stood out.
Some really good stuff from Coach Richt, it was a lengthy article so I'm not going quote the whole thing, just some of the ones that stood out.
A mother of a recruit gave Richt the idea for the name.“I had been talking about living in paradise and all of that kind of stuff so she said, ‘Why don’t you call it Paradise Camp?"
We had probably names of 50 guys we knew who were going to come that have already been offered by us, which you can’t hardly get 50 guys on the field at the same time like that,” Richt said. “Then there’s probably another 30 that we are very strongly evaluating just to see where we go and there’s probably some guys who showed up that we didn’t know we’re coming—every year that happens at a camp where someone pops and it’s who’s this cat? There’s a massive amount of Division I players out here and a bunch who have already been offered by us so we got a great group. It’s hard to get this many great players on your campus at one time.
We told these guys—if you’re offered, you’re offered and you don’t have to go try to get an offer, you’ve already got an offer—let’s compete,” Richt said. “We want guys that want to compete. That’s all our former alums talk about. At the ‘U’ we compete. If you want to come here and cross your arms, that’s OK and sometimes a guy’s got a little nagging injury or something like that and there’s a bunch of dudes that absolutely did not have to compete today, but they chose to compete and that fires us up with the type of guy he is.
I’ve been doing that back flip since I was 15 years old,” Richt said. “As long as I keep landing on my feet I’ll do it. If I don’t land on my feet we’ll call 911 and that will be the last time I try it.
These former greats came back because they love this university,” Richt said. “They came on their own dime. They did not get flown in. They’re not getting a big ole paycheck or nothing like that. I just said hey man I need your help if you can come help us coach this camp and some are coaches and some are just speakers for it, but they blessed us by showing up. It’s just phenomenal having those guys show up.
