My sincerest apologies if this or something similar has been addressed in another thread...I did a search but didn't come across anything.

Was wondering if any of you that are close to the program could share your thoughts on if we might see any of the newly retired or soon to be retired players from our 99-03 run get into coaching? The first guy that came to mind is Portis...just always struck me as a guy that played a lot smarter than he might have come across in interviews...**** most of our guys from that time would fall under that description, Edge is usually blazed or appears to be but dude always played smart.

But Portis though...seems like a dude that would have the enthusiasm and personality to relate to players. Another reason I'm curious about this is I know people have brought up Saban's staff and how he has guys basically acting as coaches under different titles. We all know we ain't never (eva eva) getting away with anything like that. But having someone on staff as an 'offensive/defensive assistant' doesn't seem too far fetched. Imagine Portis serving as almost a consultant, he doesn't have to sacrifice his personal life in the way a FT coach would, but the program gets to have him around without having to worry about breaking any *** *** ncaa bylaws, and you know he would be able to help in recruiting. Kids we are going after right now still look up to that crew that won titleS (see what I did there) Just feel like this **** is so competitive you have to try and utilize every resource you have. Golden made it a point to invite former players back at his opening press conference...why stop there?

Chip, Pete, etc...thoughts?

Those other coaches that Saban has cannot recruit. They basically breakdown tape and scout teams.

But they can talk to and recruit high school coaches, boosters, etc. I suspect it will become an increasing part of college football.

sometimes recruiting the coach is as big as the player/family...those guys hold a lot of juice with their players and families and with good reason.

Not every guy wants to retire from football and go work an 80 hr a week job. Especially when they probably have some serious coin in the bank.

I did remember reading Portis lost some money on that casino bull**** Rosenhaus got his guys to invest in though

It's the very rare superstar Multi-millionaire NFL vet who comes off 10 years of getting his *** kicked and wants to transition into 100 hour work weeks for $150k a year. It takes a special kind of work ethic and desire to coach. Most of these guys just want to chill and get their money working for them.

And it's really hard to justify giving someone their first coaching position at the Miami level. They need seasoning to make sure they can handle the job as well. No experience at this level.

Barrow is a nice exception. He doesn't need this ****. But he's a pastor, a teacher, and he loves it. But you might remember he started coaching at Homestead HS, rising to DC there before he got called up.
