2021 Miami Northwestern (FL) CB Tim Burns committed to the Miami Hurricanes while on campus tonight.

The 5-10 145 pounder is currently a consensus 3-star in the national rankings. According to the 247Sports Composite, Burns is the #515 player nationally, #40 CB in the country, and the #64 player in the Sunshine State. His commitment keeps UM's 2021 class at the #1 class ranking on both 247Sports and on Rivals.

The Player

Burns earned his UM late last month after impressing the staff in-person at Paradise Camp. The Miami Northwestern star has been long-waiting on a UM offer, so it was only a matter of time until he pulled the trigger for the local Hurricanes. He chose Miami over offers from Kentucky, Tennessee, Pitt, and Kansas State among others.

On film, Burns is a DB that can jump out of the gym and has a proficiency to go up and grab one-handed interceptions. Demonstrates a rare type of athleticism that only elite corners possess. Good, not great, speed. Shows physicality on tape and isn’t afraid to make a violent hit on a receiver despite his slight frame. Needs to work on improving his hips and avoiding turning his back on his man. Has above average ball skills and is always looking to a take a pick back to the house. Establishes that he can hold the edge against the run, defeat blockers, and come up to make a play. Shows his versatility by being an impact player in the return game. Would like to see him become more aggressive with his hands at the line of scrimmage.

The Class

Burns’ commitment brings the total class numbers to 13 and he is the first cornerback commitment in Category21. The spots here will be in flux until Miami closes out the 2020 class, but it’s safe to assume UM will take at least one other corner.

The Canes have had their eye on two cornerback teammates in their own backyard, and both are already considered among the nation’s best. Miami Palmetto (FL) 4-stars Jason Marshall and Corey Collier have been pursued by UM for about a year and a half and have already been on campus countless times, most recently in early June. Both take most of their trips together and have seemed to zero in on the in-state Big 3, visiting each of Miami, UF, and FSU, as well as making a west coast trip to USC this spring. Collier is an FSU legacy and most believe the Noles are slightly out in front in the early going, while Marshall is considered a UM lean at this point.

While Miami has been going after the Palmetto duo for a long time now, they’ve thrown out a few offers to a number of corners since the spring evaluation period has began. Most recently, UM offered Jesuit (FL) 3-star Jordan Young after he visited for Paradise Camp. IMG Academy (FL) 3-star Markevious Brown named Miami as his leader after his offer in April, but his profile has expanded greatly since then, including an offer from Alabama. UM likes local 3-star DB Phillip O’Brien from Deerfield Beach at corner, however most believe FSU has an early lead for him. Out of state CB offers have also gone to Ensworth (TN) 4-star Andre Turrentine and William Amos Hough (NC) Derek Spearman, but the relationship between these prospects and UM is still in the early stages. Turrentine has visited this past March, while Spearman has indicted that a UM visit is coming soon.

The Team

The Canes only lose Trajan Bandy at corner after the 2020 season. By 2021, DJ Ivey, Al Blades, Christian Williams, Nigel Bethel, and Te’Cory Couch will have multiple years of experience and Miami will have their 2020 signees with a year under their belts. Depending on who pans out, the depth chart should be relatively settled, with potentially a bit role open for a true freshman like Burns.

At his currently height-weight, Burns has a ways to go to prove his body is ready for the rigors of the college game; fortunately for him, he will still have nearly 2 years to develop his frame by the time the first game of his UM career is upon him. From what I’ve seen from Burns, he has the raw ability to be an All-ACC talent and contribute in a significant way at Miami.

Honestly, I was sold after his display at Paradise Camp. He was just so incredibly fluid and natural. I love this picked up. I say he’ll mirror Tecory Couch weight wise by the time he touches camp.

On 247 Ivins stated he is up to 155 lbs and looks a little taller. Couch came in thin but is physically developing as did Bethel.
