2020 Dublin (GA) DE Romello Height committed to Miami tonight.
The 6-5 215 pounder is currently a consensus 3-star recruit in the national rankings. According to the 247Sports Composite, Height is the #447 player nationally, #28 OLB in the country, and the #47 player in the Peach State. His commitment keeps Category20 at the #9 class ranking on 247Sports and #5 on Rivals.
The Player
Height is listed as a linebacker by various recruiting sites, but is being recruited to play DE in Miami’s scheme. He landed his UM offer in spring back in March and slowly started building a relationship with Miami’s staff during the past three months. That groundwork culminated in an official visit for Miami in mid-June and UM felt they made a big move for him on that trip. The visit went well enough that Height decided to speed up his decision timetable from September to now, and he felt comfortable pulling the trigger for the Canes tonight. He chose UM over schools like Florida, Georgia Tech, and Kentucky among others.
Although Height’s junior film is unavailable and set to private, his sophomore film reveals a raw and athletic talent that can line up anywhere on the field and make an impact, including at wide receiver. The Canes see Height as a rush end/viper type that could also drop back into coverage on occasion and I can see why, as Height shows the ability to stick with running backs out of the backfield. That type of versatility can really serve the Miami defense well and gives Manny Diaz the freedom to be even more multiple in the looks he can throw at offenses. Height also demonstrates an aptitude to shed blocks and uses his hands very well. Would like to see more tape of him with his hand on the ground rushing the passer, but he has the athletic traits and outstanding length to develop into a beast that can disrupt a team’s passing game and put pressure on the QB. He recorded 9 sacks as a junior. Once he puts on more weight, he’s going to be a weapon in the run game with his elite back-side pursuit and he closes quickly on his target.
The Class
Height’s commitment brings the total class numbers to 20 and he is the second true DE in the class along with Mallard Creek (NC) 3-star Quentin Williams. Columbus (FL) 3-star Elijah Roberts is swingman that could end up at DT down the line, but Miami will start him out as a DE and move him inside for special packages. The Canes would like to add one more true DE to pair with Height and Williams and a familiar target has re-emerged to take that spot.
A surprising name rejoined the DE board recently in Oakleaf (FL) 4-star Chantz Williams. Williams previously eliminated the Canes in favor of a top 3 of UGA, UF, and LSU and he was thought to favoring the Tigers from that group after a secret visit to Baton Rouge last month. However, the Canes are back in contact again and pushing hard. Williams’ teammate Jalen Rivers committed to Miami earlier this month and in the past, the pair stated their desire to play together at the next level before later backing off that. Now, it seems Rivers is doing work to get Williams on board with Miami. A decision is expected on July 20th and some believe that the Canes have really made up a lot of ground with Williams.
Previously, Miami had been treating both Berkeley Prep (FL) 4-star Jaylen Harrell as a priority at DE, however, Harrell did not make his scheduled visit for Paradise camp. Harrell seems very open right now and doesn’t look to be close to ending his recruitment any time soon.
The Team
The Canes lose seniors Trevon Hill and Scott Patchan following the 2019 season, while junior Jon Garvin could potentially leave early to head to the NFL. All three are expected to contribute heavily in the defensive line rotation this season, so Height and his fellow classmates will have plenty of open playing time to absorb if they can prove they’re ready. However, the Canes have really been stacking some serious young talent at end, including guys such as Gregory Rousseau and Jahfari Harvey who have been making big waves in practice, as well as 5-star transfer Jaelan Phillips. The competition for reps should be a good one in 2020.
Height has a long and lanky build as a senior in high school, so he would need to start putting on some good weight now to be physically able to contribute at Miami as a freshman, although he looked a little bigger than his listed 215 pounds when I saw him on his official visit. Graduating early and enrolling for spring ball would be huge for a guy like Height, as we’ve seen true freshmen with thin frames completely morph their bodies by fall after arriving in spring. Height has a lot of upside and should be in the mix to contribute or even start by his sophomore season.
