In a strange story, 2019 St. Thomas Aquinas DT Jason Munoz got out of his signed letter of intent to Miami due to the head coaching change and has flipped his commitment to Syracuse.
The 6-4, 275-pounder is currently a 3-star in the national rankings. According to the 247Sports Composite, Munoz is the #843 player nationally, #58 DE in the country, and the #109 player in the Sunshine State. His decommitment moves Miami’s 2019 class down to ranking down to #36 on 247Sports and #43 on Rivals.
The Background
Munoz had been committed to Miami since June. Munoz did not have much if any interest at all coming from Miami before Jess Simpson arrived in Coral Gables, but all that changed when Munoz went down to Miami at the beginning of June and worked out in front of the coaches. Since Munoz missed his entire junior season with an injury, this was the first chance coach Simpson had to really evaluate him. Munoz performed extremely well at that camp and earned an offer from Miami that same day. Munoz committed on the spot.
Prior to getting interest from Miami, Munoz had taken unofficial visits to both Louisville and Tennessee. However, his entire recruitment shut down when he committed to Miami. He did not take any other visits or meet with any other coaches from that point forward.
Even though he signed with the Canes last month, Munoz was let out of his LOI last week, with the official reason being because of the head coaching change at UM. However, per team sources, this was a parting of ways due to medical issues related to bloodwork that was keeping Munoz from putting on weight. Some that have followed his story may remember he lost a lot of weight this year and has been working to put it back on. The concern was that he wouldn't be able to keep on the necessary weight to play DT at Miami and that it was best for the parties to go their separate ways.
Future of the Class
Munoz's decommitment brings the total class numbers down to 15, and leaves Miami with two DT signees in Surge19. Poly Prep (NY) 4-star Jason Blissett and Buford (GA) 3-star Jalar Holley have already signed with the Canes and are locked into the program.
UM has really only been pursuing one other DT to wrap up this cycle, and that is Blissett’s close friend Jared Harrison-Hunte, a 3-star from Christ the King HS (NY). A late riser just like Blissett, Harrison-Hunte cancelled his Alabama visit to take his second official visit to Miami this weekend and all signs point to him joining the Canes in the near future; a source close to his recruitment feels that UM locked up Harrison-Hunte this weekend.
