This week we try and distract you from the bye week talking Clemson, Lashlee, and the Battle of Karansebes.
Ed Sanchez (Twitter): Does the bye week really benefit the team right now when they are clicking at many cylinders?
I think it’s a benefit for the offense. Lashlee is one of the best OCs in the game and the extra week will allow him to draw up the necessary wrinkles to keep Clemson off balance. As for the defense, judging by what we saw after last year’s byes, I’m not so sure the bye week is a benefit. Baker has his work cut out for him going against the future #1 pick in the draft.
@Lil Bryant 305 (CanesInsight): Is Rumph getting an extension? Asking for a friend.
I doubt it. There were strong rumors last year that Rumph was close to being let go. Recruiting at CB is still a mess, and that’s being generous. Manny is going to have a tough decision to make, stay with a coach that shows results on the field but struggles bringing in the top end talent, or play the field and see who else is out there. Miami should never have continuous depth issues at CB and for me, that is grounds to make a change.
@CanefaninBuckeyeland (CanesInsight): We’re recruiting like the NCAA is going to increase ICs due to Covid. Is there anything to this?
So far, no. Spots are limited in terms of the 25 IC limit. You have to remember, we’re dealing with the NCAA so all logic and common sense goes out of the window. They still haven’t said how they plan on dealing with giving everyone a free year of eligibility which is going to have roster implications for years to come. I would like to see them increase the IC limit, even if it’s just by a few and not have transfers count as an IC.
@Samson Doyo (CanesInsight): What up with Payton?
It was disappointing to not see him out there vs FSU. There still seems to be some lingering Covid concerns. We wrote last week that we would like to see him step up with Harley and Pope’s drop issues. The WR rotation will be an interesting story line to keep an eye on versus Clemson. My eyes will be on Redding and Payton to give us something extra against Clemson.
@OriginalCanesCanesCanes (CanesInsight): We’ve seen three games, and significant improvement on the offensive side. I’m thinking Lashlee has a wrinkle or two we have yet to see. Assuming this is correct, what would you expect to see that we haven’t seen before on offense? Or do you expect it to be an approach similar to FSU or Louisville?
Lashlee is going to have to call the game of his life on October 10th and I fully expect him to be on his “A” game. This will have to include some things we haven’t seen before. I can see him using Brevin Jordan as a decoy and utilizing Mallory a lot more, who has only seen a few targets this year so not a lot of film out there. With the run game, we’ll see a lot of read option and once Lashlee sees how they are reacting, I would expect some type of counter off of that. I would also like to see some new look RPOs implemented to keep Clemson off balance.
@JD08 (CanesInsight): It seems like we've seen a player rise above the crowd every game we've played. Who will be the breakout players against Clemson? What do you think will be the primary strategy to stop Etienne and the running game and will it be successful?
On offense, a prediction for a breakout player would be Will Mallory. As I stated above, I think Lashlee will have some wrinkles for him. Brevin Jordan is a household name and quite frankly, the only pass catcher that instills fear in DCs. Lots of attention will be on him from Venables. As for defense, Harrison-Hunte has been a pleasant surprise this season and is deserving of an increased workload. If we’re going to win, the DTs will have to create havoc and JHH can aid in that.
The primary strategy to stop Etienne won’t be much different from what this defense normally tries to do, stop them in the backfield before they get going. I don’t think we’ll see any dramatic change such as 2-gapping. We’re going to see some TFLs but we’ll also get gashed and with Etienne’s speed, that could mean disaster. The LBs have to fill their gaps and tackle well if we’re going to have a shot in containing Etienne.
@305407cane (CanesInsight): Who has been your favorite player to watch this year? If Lashlee leaves who is your pick for OC if you could have anyone(realistic)?
Cam Harris has been so much fun to watch through 3 games. He runs hard and is a big play waiting to happen. We’ve seen glimpses of his ability the last 2 years but in this offense, he’s blossoming into a super star.
As far as Lashlee leaving, I think a realistic option is in house with Rob Likens. He has OC experience in the P5 and could provide some level of continuity. An outside hire at OC would mean some turnover amongst this offensive staff, which I really like from an on-field perspective as well as on the recruiting side. I hope we can get another year out of Lashlee before he moves on to be a HC.
@ben (CanesInsight): best sandwich: cuban, medianoche, or croqueta preparada?
Just reading that question made me hungry and is there a wrong answer? Probably not. Right now, at 8:11pm on a Thursday night, I’d take the croqueta preparada. You can never go wrong choosing a croqueta, NEVER!
@FreePawn (CanesInsight): Which two of Dalvin Cook, Kenyan Drake and Jonathan Taylor should I start next week?
Cook is the easy choice. For the 2nd start, I’d go with Drake. He’ll most likely get more touches than Taylor.
@yessirking (CanesInsight): The freshmen class of 2020 has some athletes, who gets drafted the highest?
That’s a good question and you have to look at the current state of the NFL as well. Knighton and Chaney will both be stars in college but that doesn’t always translate to being a high draft pick, especially at a low value position. I’m going to go with Chantz Williams. Pass rushers are at a premium in the NFL and he has the athletic traits that NFL teams will covet. Tyler Van Dyke may have something to say about that though.
@YUMU (CanesInsight): Which bench player makes the biggest impact in the second half of the season?
Jared Harrison-Hunte. He’s been unbelievable through 3 games off the bench and I see his snap count going way up. I’m not sure if he will unseat Jon Ford as the starter listed on the depth chart but their playing time will look a lot more even as we get later in the year. He’s the prototypical 3T that thrives in this defense, just like RJ McIntosh and Gerald Willis.
@Cane Fan 4 Life (CanesInsight): Will Lashlee want to get into a shootout with Clemson or will we see longer drives and possessions to limit their offense?
It’s in Lashlee’s DNA to play fast and score as quickly as possible. I would be disappointed to see them intentionally slow the pace and get away from our identity. If we can play fast and run a lot of plays, we can wear down Clemson’s defense who really hasn’t been challenged yet this year. It’s up to Baker and Manny to slow down Clemson’s offense, which I don't see happening all that often with Lawrence being deadly accurate and a homerun threat at RB in Etienne. If we're going to win, it’ll be in a shootout and I’m happy Lashlee is on our side.
@CaneLife93 (CanesInsight): Moe's or Chipotle, and why?
Well, I don’t eat Chipotle and here’s the story why. It was a warm afternoon in 2015 and I went to Chipotle for the first time with a coworker for lunch. I don’t recall what I ordered but I remember enjoying my meal. My coworker and I got the same thing except I got sour cream and he didn't. Around 5:30pm on the drive home I started to feel not quite right. By 7pm, I had over a 101 fever and every ******* of my body was projecting some type of liquid. This lasted nearly non-stop for 24 hours and as I lay on the bathroom floor in agonizing pain, I vowed to never stop foot in another Chipotle again. My answer is Moe’s.
@uprising (CanesInsight): Do you think they will move Campbell to LG and keep Zion at LT being that JC53 still needs to get his strength up?
Through 3 games, we’ve seen 3 different starting lineups along the OL and we’ve seen success with all of those lineups. Campbell won the LT job in camp for a reason and has played well, but Zion also played well in his only start. I don’t see them shuffling Campbell down to guard to replace Clark as I think Campbell will go back to starting at LT and Zion being the swing tackle.
@k9cane (CanesInsight): Is Miami better off with Gary Stevens taking over as head coach in 89 or Dennis Erickson?
It’s hard to say, because while Erickson definitely had a list of flaws that would eventually hurt the program, he did win two championships. I know the automatic response is that he did it with Jimmy’s players, and that is true, it’s not like winning titles is something just any great team can do. Jimmy himself proved that in 1986 and in 1988. At the end of the day, you have to win the games, and Erickson’s squads won a lot before it came off the rails.
Stevens seems like a great soldier and a very good coach, but it’s possible that he just didn’t have it in him to be a head coach. That’s not something that we could really see from the outside, but for a guy to have that much success without ever getting (or taking) a shot to be the head man somewhere does say a lot. And it’s not like we only passed on him once, either. They dodged him to bring in an established HC in 89, then passed him over for a pro DC and different Jimmy staff member in Butch six years later.
I would say hiring Stevens might have limited the loss of control that hit in the early-mid 90s, so there’s some long term benefit there if he didn’t win the titles. But, if that’s the timeline we’re on, maybe Butch doesn’t make it back here in 95, and, looking back with hindsight, nobody would choose a Gary Stevens run over that.
@canecrazy23 (CanesInsight): Do you like the toilet paper over or under?
Over. I feel like it gives you better leverage when you go for the rip. It also looks more classy.
@Luke Caneswalker (CanesInsight): Is this the game our Oline shines?
The offensive line, a punching bag for this fanbase the last few years and deservedly so, has already shined. No sacks given up through 3 games (sacks attributed to QB), 330+ yards rushing vs UAB, and 99 points scored the last 2 weeks. Do they shine vs Clemson? No, I don't think so. Clemson has some dudes up front and those guys are going to make some plays. Venables likes the zone blitz and will have some drawn up that will cause some confusion up front for us. Can they do enough for us to win? Absolutely but they won’t dominate a Clemson DL.
@JD08 (CanesInsight): At the Battle of Karansebes, would the Turks have defeated the Austrians had the friendly fire incident not occurred?
I’ll first answer assuming the validity of the reports of the events before the battle, then go into more of why it seems unlikely to me that the reports are 100% true.
The Austrians supposedly fortified the small city of Karansebes with 100k troops, knowing that it was a valuable location because of its location at the merging point of the Timis and Sebes Rivers. After the supposed incident, roughly 10k were dead or incapacitated and the rest abandoned the city due to what occurred, making the Ottoman victory as impressive as me walking into my backyard and planting a flag.
Would the Ottomans have won had the Hapsburg army not self-inflicted so many (literal) wounds? Yes, I think so, because I believe that the friendly fire incident is likely hyperbolized, if not largely fabricated. Initial reports of the event were nonexistent and the story only came out 43 years later about what happened, so there is easily some doubt about the validity of this occurrence (even the 10k dead number came out 200 years after the event).
It’s possible that the Hapsburgs knew the Ottomans were going to be too much for them in Karansebes and retreated, which would be unthinkable when such a valuable location was at stake. The story of the “battle” may be an attempt to retrofit a reasoning for why it happened, and what might have started as rumors to mock the Hapsburgs became a widespread historical belief.
