Gotta admit I was disappointed in his play Saturday from a layman's perspective.
I expected to see more considering the added strength/weight etc., but he looked similar to the end of last year.
He doesn't seem to shed blocks well at all.

i kind of expected more but it was the first game so i think he will come alive in the next couple games.

It was clear to me that the gameplan was to double and chip him and force the other defensive lineman to get pressure one on one.

Clearly it worked...

Its going to be tough for him to have an impact this year if other guys aren't able to capitalize on teams over compensating to prevent him from making plays in the backfield.

I know everyone thought he was going to go all Medearis on us, but didnt he still have a TFL or two plus the recovered fumble despite the double teams and gameplanning away from him? Off the top of my head I still remember him being at the bottom of a few piles.

At this point, I think his run defense is ahead of his pass rushing, which I'm okay with for now. It'll be on Coach D to scheme up some pass rush, most likely with the young guys, McCord, Hoilett, Terry, etc.

As one of the mods posted in another thread, don't be surprised if Chick only has just say 5 or 6 sacks during the season.

Also mentioned to me while watching the game. Chick isn't a rush DE. He's a hold the line type of DE that will be solid against the run and get his sacks when they are there.

A lot of times you can't just look at stats but have to watch the game and see him holding the line, forcing the runs inside, etc.

Allen Bailey was actually underrated because he wasn't a sack guy. He was an excellent run stopper. I expect to Chickillo to have a similar role and career. Unfortunately he won't get the credit he deserves as a result though.

He's not an elite pass rusher... Even his sacks last year is attributed to his motor to keep going and broken plays... That being said, I think he played the run well... On running plays it looked like BC couldnt move him off the ball...

It's early. His repertoire needs to improve, but there's no reason why a kid with a non-stop motor can't get double-digit sacks if taught better technique. Not assigning blame at all, just saying that he can and hopefully will do better. I'm not convinced of this "hold the line"-type yet. We've seen other guys with similar motors excel in getting to the QB.

I just figure that he would look different with a guy like Palermo coaching him. I don't have many qualms about this coaching stuff, but DL coaching is one of them.
