It’s been an up-and-down season for the Christopher Columbus Explorers (6-4), as they finished up their regular season with a loss to Killian last Wednesday. The team has their sights set on this week’s opening round playoff game against Krop.
Senior running back Daryl Chestnut spoke about the team’s mindset.
“We have one goal and that’s just to go to states and beating everybody. We get away from running the ball sometimes, we take some teams too lightly, and we just don’t come out with that fire. We know what we have to do now.”
Chestnut is having a spectacular season, leading South Florida with 12.3 yards per carry. He has also scored 13 touchdowns, but Chestnut is humble about his accolades.
“I’m doing alright. I’m trying to help the team with anything I can. There’s more damage to be done, so for right now I’m just doing alright, not anything special. I’m working to get that state championship.”
The Explorers’ running back chimed in on his style of play.
“I can make a big play and make something out of nothing. I try to mold myself as Ray Rice, that running back from North Carolina (Gio Bernard), and Doug Martin so I’m in that mold of a running back.”
Chestnut is a hot commodity with some of the top college programs in the country. He talked about how the process is going for him.
“I’m talking to Texas Tech, West Virginia, Kansas State, Florida State, NC State, and that’s really about it so far. I like Florida State and Texas Tech a lot. I like them all, though.”
What will his decision ultimately come down to?
“I’m looking for somewhere I could really call home and feel safe at. I want to go somewhere that fits me overall. I’m visiting Texas Tech on December 7th, but other than that I have no visits planned. I’m just taking it slow.”
A school that has yet to recruit him is Miami, who might be looking for a running back after the de-commitment of Alex Collins. Chestnut would be open to listening to the ‘Canes.
“Yeah, I’d be interested in Miami because that’s my hometown team and I wouldn’t mind playing alongside Duke Johnson. We’re both homerun threats and line up on kick-off returns and do damage with the ball in our hands so I feel like we are a little similar.”
