Changes to CFB Playoffs? Likely for 2026 not 2025

1. Expand to 16 teams
2. Eliminate bye weeks for top seeds
3. Eliminate conference championships or make them have no impact
4. Make first two rounds played at home stadiums
5. Eliminate pre-season rankings.
6. Eliminate network affiliations with single conferences (espn/sec partnership is hurting the sport bigtime)
7. Make targeting into a tiered penalty (accidentally and weak, 5 yard penalty and no ejection)
8. Eliminate conference referee crews and allow punishments for bad performances
9. Make the players some type of employee that leads to the restriction of the transfer portal (the good ole days of you can transfer undergrad but have to sit a year were the best).

I think these 9 things would greatly improve the product.

The product isnt any worst because 13-16 the ranked teams dont make it in.

Take the runner up and champion from the top 5 leagues and have a playoff.

Every week it should change in the playoff like the nfl . By how who wins and how you’re seated

I bet Conference Championships would be way cooler if we were winning some.

Fix the seeding schedule. Maybe it was a coincidence but number one Oregon got screwed having to play Ohio State. The Suckeyes were the eighth seed and had to win an extra game, so there’s that.

F-OHIO STATE though.

What the B1G and SEC will ask for is 2 or more auto-bids with conference championship week being turned into a play-in for lower seeds.

1. Playoff should be 8 or 16. No byes.

2. Conferences should be smaller and regionalized. Crazy concept I know. 16-20 team super conferences with no divisions, mean somebody is gonna get a Texas or Indiana or SMU path, straight to the playoff.

3. Eliminate the auto bid for the G5.

These 3 simple things would eliminate 95% of the complaints.

Exactly. Super conferences were a mistake. There will be teams that get lucky from time to time and get an easy path in a power conference. With 8 conference games and 16+ teams in a conference, you are only playing half or less of the teams.

How I'd do it:

New Realigned Conferences:

Maybe you swap a team or two, but in general this is probably the best 8 Division setup that can protect the most rivalries - you just have to let teams have like 2-3 games that they can schedule themselves to protect rivalries.

Schedule:
- 1 Game against G4 Opponent.
- 6 Divisional Games where everyone plays their entire division yearly.
- 4 In-Conference Non-Divisional Games on a rotational basis that shifts yearly. So if you are Division A, year 1 you'd play:
---- 1 Game against In-Conference Division B opponent that finished same place as you
---- 1 Game against In-Conference Division C opponent that finished opposite place as you
---- 2 Games against In-Conference Division D opponent that finished same AND opposite place as you.
(then year 2 its same finish Div C, opposite Div D, Same and Opposite Div B, and so on)
- 3 Free to Schedule Games Against Any Power Conference opponent you want (to protect Rivalries).

Playoff:
- 14 Team playoff
- Each division winner guaranteed playoff spot (8 Spots total).
- Next 3 best from each Conference gets the wild card spots
- Top team in each conference receive Byes
- Re-Seeding For every round, no set path. First round, home team is higher ranked team. 2nd round and beyond are NY6 bowls, with Higher seed getting preference/pick.

The games were mostly crap. The home games in cold weather cities makes for garbage football.

It’s the same with the NFL.
