It’s never too early to take notice of impact recruits in South Florida and that is the case with 2016 Champagnat Catholic QB Kato Nelson (6-0, 170), who is coming off of a tremendous season where he led the Lions to a state title. Nelson threw for 2,414 yards with 31 TDs and only 5 interceptions with a completion percentage of 61%.
“It feels good because all of the hard work we put in and to see myself on TV with a medal around my neck was the best feeling in the world. We proved all the doubters wrong and won a state championship when nobody said we could,” said Nelson.
Although Nelson is known for his athletic ability and arm strength, the young quarterback also focuses on the nuances of the position.
“My strengths are being able to work the pocket, being able to create time and be accurate with the football. The arm strength is mostly mechanics and being good with your feet rather than just how strong you are.”
A family connection to Florida State has the Noles on the young quarterback’s mind.
“Childhood favorite would have to be FSU because my uncle Stanford Samuels played corner there. Growing up, they’ve always been a favorite.”
Miami is another school that has Nelson’s attention.
“I like the camaraderie there and I know a few players that go there like Duke Johnson and Tracy Howard and they always give me good feedback on what’s going on there and it’s close to home.”
The offense that Nelson plays in now gives him the ability to make a lot of plays for his team. What system is he looking to play in at the next level?
“I would prefer a spread, but I feel like I can play in any style. I like the balanced attack with a read option and also having the ability to spread it around.”
