Miami kept rolling on the recruiting trail Thursday night, receiving their first commitment of the 2022 class in DE Jamaal Johnson from Chaminade-Madonna. I spoke with Chaminade head coach Dameon Jones to discuss what Jamaal brings to the table.

“It depends on how big he gets, but right now, I see him sticking on the outside. You are talking about a high character kid. Big, fast, strong, big hands. He fits what Miami does now, so the upside for him is going to be tremendous.”

At 6’2” 230 pounds and being only a rising junior, Johnson still has a lot of room to grow, and Jones thinks Johnson’s only scratched the surface of his potential.

“His physicality, his knowledge of the game, and his speed - by the time he finishes high school, he is going to be ridiculous. He’s that now, but you have two more years with him here.”

Johnson plays alongside a fellow Miami commit in 2021 DT Allan Haye on the Chaminade D-Line, and the two are very good friends.

“He is a run stuffer and pass rusher as well. He is so light on his feet and explosive for his size. It is nice to watch.”

On the opposite side of the line is one of the top defensive ends in the country in the 2022 class, Kenyatta Jackson.

“He’s a high character kid as well, but he’s more finesse. He’s very explosive, very long, and very athletic. Their games are a little bit different, but both are very productive.”

Ever since the 2019 class when Miami signed three players from Chaminade, the Lions have been as friendly, if not more friendly, to Miami as any other school in the area. Is this because of guys individually wanting to go to Miami or guys wanting to stick together at the next level?

“A little bit of both. Guys grow up here in South Florida liking UM and wanting to be a part of it. Then knowing guys on that team already, former teammates, communicating with them as well, it’s a little bit of both.”

Chaminade will look to win their 4th straight state championship this upcoming season.

Kid is going to blow up This year at the DE position. Has all the tools sans height to play the position extremely well. Let’s hope he becomes an ambassador for the 2022 class and helps pull in kids like Kenyatta in to the class.

I believe kid can grow to be a very quick-footed 3T in this defense. His pass rushing skills from an interior position would be great. Remember guys that film is of a SOPHOMORE. Chaminade has a star studded dline and jit definitely holds his own.
