CORAL GABLES, FLA. – Miami (21-8, 10-7 ACC) will wrap up its regular season against Virginia Tech (21-9, 10-7 ACC) on Saturday for a noon tip at the Watsco Center. ESPN2 will have the television broadcast, while WQAM 590-AM has the local radio broadcast.
Both schools enter their final regular season game tied with NC State for fifth place in ACC play. Both schools are also coming off of last-second victories over premiere ACC schools: Miami’s Ja’Quan Newton hit a 40-foot runner at the buzzer to defeat North Carolina, 91-88, and Virginia Tech’s Chris Clarke made a putback with four seconds remaining to defeat Duke, 64-63.
The Hurricanes are 21-14 all-time against the Hokies, including 10-4 all-time against the Hokies in home games. This will be the second of two meetings between the schools, as Miami defeated Virginia Tech, 84-75, in Blacksburg on Feb. 3. In that game, junior Anthony Lawrence II had a career day, recording a career-high 25 points and also racked up a career-best 13 rebounds.
Miami has won three straight games (at Notre Dame, Boston College, at No. 9 North Carolina) by a combined total of seven points. Following its victory against the Tar Heels, the Canes recorded its 10th conference win of the season and now has won 10 or more ACC games in five of head coach Jim Larrañaga’s seven years at UM.
Virginia Tech has won three of their last four games and has marquee victories over then-No.2 Virginia, No. 10 North Carolina, No. 15 Clemson and most recently No. 5 Duke. The Hokies average 80.6 points per game and allows 71.9 points per contest. They are a well-rounded squad with five players averaging in double-figure scoring, led by junior guard Justin Robinson at 13.7 and senior guard Justin Bibbs at 13.2 points per game.
Prior to the game, Miami will conduct Senior Day ceremonies, honoring its three student-athletes, Ja’Quan Newton, Mike Robinson and Chris Stowell, as well as its three senior student managers, Tyler Storch, Amanda Hequin and Cooper Tinsley.
Miami begins postseason play next week at the 2018 ACC Tournament, which runs Tuesday through Saturday at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Hurricanes have clinched a first-round bye on Tuesday. Miami and Virginia Tech both are still in the running for double byes. With a win Saturday, the Canes potentially could earn a double bye and as high as the No. 3 seed or as low as the 5-seed. With a loss Saturday, UM would finish with the No. 6 or 7 seed.
