When Al Groh is one of the godfathers of the 3-4 and Golden coached it when he was at Virginia as the DC.

San Fran, BALT, NE, PIT run it in the NFL and are the perennial best defenses in the league.

BAMA runs it.

It just mystifies me.

We don't run a cover 2. We are multiple and run different fronts based on the opponents personnel

Golden plays the scheme to his talent, i'm sure if he had the players to run it he would.

Golden cant just show up and switch to a 3-4 base by snapping his fingers. The personnel has to fit.

I do think Figs, AQM, and Bond could play OLB in a 3-4, Grace could play one of the ILB spots, and Kamalu could grow into a 3-4 NT or be a 3-4 DE.

Doesn't seem like strictly Cover 2 to me. More of a mixture of 2, 3 and Cover 4. Front is multiple. Have to have the right guys to stay strictly 3-4. Better have a stud at the Nose, and some big LBs. The front 7 is built around Perryman who is better protected in the 4-3. JMO.

We also run a ton of man.......you just wouldn't know it with all the armchair D-coordinators on the board. Fact is....most of the times we got burnt last year was a result of "man" coverage.

Look at who those teams have at DE and DT.
San Fran: Smith and Sopoega
Balt: Kruger and Ngata
Pit: Keisel and Hampton
Don't confuse NE's talent with their defense which as a unit is a bit above average though you could still use Jones and Wilfork.

Like everyone else has said, we don't possess the talent to run it. Not comparing those guys to the college level but who on our team is a Justin Smith or a Haloti Ngata of college football? No one. Bama can run it because they have elite talent at those positions. When the staff actually develops the D-Line maybe they'll make the switch as I do believe we have the OLB to do it.

Do you think we'll see more man in the future? I think you've got to be good at it if you want to play with the big boys on third down. 3-4 vs 4-3 doesn't really matter to me as you recruit to play in the system you want to run. I think more and more teams are going with a hybrid style that Golden seems to want here.

Yes I do.....because Al Golden has said as much.

We basically run the Jerry Sandusky Penn State defense. It's what Donofrio played in.

There is zero indication by how the staffs recruits that were are going to ever be a Parcell's 3-4 style team. Conceptually though we do run parts of it in the secondary, with a lot of bend don't break principles.

I used to defend the system on TOS, but it has too many moving parts for kids to master, and they will always play a step slower bc of the read and react elements. Why recruit all this speed if they arent going to use it?

Pattern reading is a ***** for our linebackers. Eddie was terrible at it and Cornileus was even worse. Simple concepts had these guys heads spinning like tops.

Is Pattern Reading the fundamental difference between Paterno's 3-4 and Parcells 3-4?

You can pattern read in any defensive front. Saban and Bellicheck created it for cover 3 because simply dropping to a zone and reading the qb didn't work in the nfl.
