Can Golden change his gameday philosophy

Obviously the biggest issue with this team is the defense. However, Golden's game day coaching is another big concern of mine and has been since day 1. He has no feel for the game and he plays not to lose. How does he not go for it on 4th and 1 or 2 with 10 minutes to go down 8 with the way that defense was playing? The defense gave up 38 points in under 50 minutes and he thinks there's a better chance our defense stops them then us getting a couple of yards?

Who can ever forget the Virginia game last year where most of our defensive starters were out, neither team could stop each other, and with 3 minutes to go he decides to run the ball three times, punt, and put the game on our defense to make a stop?

I want to believe in Al. I want this to work. But it seems these common sense decisions are something that you either get or you don't get. It seems he just does not get it. Does anyone think Al can learn from this and change this mindset?

If not, no matter how much talent we have we will lose a game or two a year by playing not to lose and not taking advantage of our opportunities.

Please tell me there is hope for change here.

Of course he can learn and change his passive mentality.

But I believe it will take failure to make that happen. And I don't mean 8 win seasons. I mean complete and total failure.

Aiming for the middle worked for him at Temple. And now, 3 years in here, and he's been seen as a savior until just the other day.
I think he's capable of several more seasons of mediocrity before UM moves on from him. And I don't think he'll scrap his whole philosophy here. As long as his results are "decent", I think he'll try to tweak things and get them fixed (lol). Once he really fails somewhere....then he can reinvent himself. But he's been this way for too long, at too many places, with too much "success", to scrap it because of a few multi-loss seasons at UM.

Is it reasonable to hope, that after the season with time to reflect that Al will see the light?

i think most coaches come in having learned a certain way and they stick to what they know even when it doesn't work.

tressel comes to mind, who refused to change his staff or his philosophy even after getting battered on the national stage multiple times. there was real debate in OSU fans on whether he should be let go.

So you believe history will repeat itself in this case? He has good support from some of the best in the business, if he is a good CEO he will seek help. JMO

tressel would have eventually been fired i believe. he was not going to change. he had good enough players to beat team like oregon and arkansas, but elite teams were killing him. in his schemes teams with great college athletes like terrelle pryor and beanie wells could never crack the top 60 year in total offense. what would pryor done at oregon or west virginia is scary to think.

i worry golden has a similar mindset with his d. there is no reason people should be marching up and down the field on UM like they are, but we are all watching these games and its happening. repeatedly. and you can tell the players have given up. they dont think they can win right now so they dont even really try.

im not an xo guy but even an idiot like me can see that there is something fundamentally wrong with this unit. its systemic. and that has to be on him.

im kind of with willis right now, i think even if he throws the dc under the bus hes gonna bring in someone who will run his failing scheme. not someone he would allow implement something that would be a different direction.

I remember hearing a Bobby Bowden interview before the Miami FSU game and he said we were 1 or 2 recruiting classes behind.
Said it comes down to a simple formula: if you recruit the best players you will win.

We've been in NCAA jail for 3 years. We've had to completely change a culture that bordered on weakness with Shannon. Didn't Alonzo Highsmith say that we were a joke in the eyes of NFL personnel men, during the latter Shannon years, and that now he sees us like he did during our glory days.

I would have liked to see us go for that 4th down against Duke, but you forget that our defense actually stopped Duke a number of times before that series. I'm sure Golden also assumed our punt teams would tackle someone.

I think the bigger philosophy change should be at offensive coordinator. Duke was terrified whenever we started our ground and pound, yet after rushing success we inexplicably decide to change it up.
We lose 2 stating wr's in Coley and Waters, our running game is tearing them up, yet we decide it's time to air it out?

Left me scratching my head.

he plays not to lose because he has ****** players in whom he has limited confidence, especially since the FSU loss. get the talent and leaders and i would hope his philosophy my evolve.

Let's be real, his honeymoon just ended. He has a long leash and will be here at least three more years.

With that said, homeboy's career will be made or broken over those next three seasons. At the end, he will end up like Butch and eventually move on to greener pastures or end up like Randy or Larry as a linebackers coach or the head man for the Roadrunners.

With so much at stake, he will do what he believes is best for this program. He is not going to keep someone on board based on a friendship. He's not going to retain control of the D based on stubbornness. The scary part is that he may STILL believe that this way is the right way and gives us the best chance to succeed. If that remains the case, were in BIG trouble as is his career at a BCS school.

The decision is his but I doubt it'll be dictated by friendships and/or stubbornness. Lack of experience? Maybe. Stupidity? Maybe.

While I believe that we are not loaded in terms of talent/players.....I truly feel that this is just an excuse. We have people who truly believe that once the players come in the ****** system will work. If we have fans that have this destructive and illusionary type of thinking, imagine how destructive it could be for AG and Dorito to think it...BTW I do think that AG and Dorito have this type of thinking to some degree.

I want to see what AG does as the season goes on and after its over. If he keeps his boy I will lose all confidence and respect I have for him. With the talent we have we should not be getting ars rapped by duke. BTW this is not the first time we are getting bent over....20+ times in 2.5 years. There is a pattern that has not changed...Dorito must go!!!

I honestly think he puts in on the d for a "look at my boy" moment for no frio to make it look like he won the game or is doing something he did it last yr also....it sucks but dude is really really tryim for his boi

His time & situational management has been great imo. He's a quick thinker and has been on top of things in those regards. We're nitpicking a few decisions here and there.
It's his lack of in-game adjustments that's most worrisome. Specifically on the defensive side of the ball.

I'll never understand the stubborness to stay in our base defense when a team is killing us with 1 or 2 plays.
Or our unwillingness to adjust on the fly when a certain player is killing us (Ebron, WF slot WR, etc).
