Hey guys, I'm back with your primer for another week of great Broward County football. I was in a wedding last week (not like you care) but that's why I didn't have anything up for those games. Anyways, here goes....
University School (2-0) at Cypress Bay (1-0),Thursday, 7pm, Cypress Bay
This is a game that has a deja vu feel to it. Both of these teams played on this field a mere 3 weeks ago. USchool played a public school Cypress Bay, a private school. They did not, however, play each other.
USchool has been outright dominant this year. Adding in key players such as QB Sean White and WR Chris Taylor to compliment super back Jordan Scarlett has helped the Suns score a ton of points. On Defense, they have plenty of talented athletes as well.
Cypress Bay is welcoming back their coach, Mark Guandolo, back to the sidelines after a 2 week suspension. (You're on the internet, Google it). The Lightning have decent athletes and a tough minded, physical style of play, and 2015 LB Danny Thomas is quickly making a name for himself with his strong play.
Overall, I just don't see where Cypress Bay will be able to score enough points to keep up with USchool in this one.
Pick: USchool
Plantation (2-0) at Miramar (2-0), Thursday, 7pm, Miramar High
This is a good measuring stick for both teams in the early season. Plantation, which boasts CB/QB/ATH Chris Lammons and TE Ravian Pierce, has defeated Dillard and Taravella so far this season. They have been able to outclass both of those teams easily, and are building momentum for a potential playoff run.
Miramar looks to have found the key to scoring points that was woefully lacking last year. The Patriots have outscored their opponents 99-7 in the first 2 weeks. The only score (by South Plantation in week 1) was on a kickoff return against the 3rd strings Special Teams unit. On offense, 7 different players have scored TDs already. On defense, the Darkside Defense is making a case for once again being the best in the State, limiting their opponents to less than 50 yards rushing COMBINED. From what I hear, that's pretty good, right?
Once upon a time (2007), Blanche Ely had a highly rated player who, while mainly a CB, played QB, WR, RB, TE, LB, S, P, K, PR and KR in a game against Miramar. This player was a singular talent who scored touchdowns for his team, and also impacted the game on many levels. The rest of the Ely team, however, couldn't keep up with Miramar.
That player was NFL all-pro CB Patrick Peterson (then Johnson). His team lost that game 51-12.
That's about right.
Pick: Miramar by more than the 7pts I've seen listed.
St. Thomas Aquinas (1-0) vs John Curtis (La.) (1-0), 10pm eastern, Mercedez-Benz Superdome, New Orleans, La.
Now this is a big game. 2 defending State Champions. One (John Curtis) last year's mythical National Champion. Great traditions. Great players. Great Coaches. Great Alumni. Just an all around great game.
For me, this game will come down to new St. Thomas QB Wade Freebeck making enough plays to win. He has incredible weapons at his disposal, including WRs Devante Peete and Corey Holmes and RBs Madre London and Deltron Sands. John Curtis will probably stop the run at times, forcing Freebeck to beat them. How he does in those pressure situations will, in my mind, decide the game.
Pick: John Curtis. I just don't trust Freebeck. I'm sorry.
Columbus at American Heritage, 7:30pm, Thursday, American Heritage
This one is simple: American Heritage has electric, explosive athletes (Sony Michel, Isaiah McKenzie, and Torrance Gibson) and Columbus doesn't.
Pick: American Heritage
Other Games
Cooper City at Cardinal Gibbons 7pm, Thursday, Cardinal Gibbons
Pick: Cardinal Gibbons
Boyd Anderson at Flanagan, 7pm, Thursday, Flanagan HS
Pick: Flanagan
South Broward at Hallandale, 7pm, Thursday, Hallandale HS
Pick: Hallandale
