Jai Lucas landed his first big fish out the Portal with the commitment of Indiana transfer F Malik Reneau.

Reneau, a Miami native, entered the Portal on March 18th after spending three seasons with Indiana University. During his junior season with the Hoosiers, the 6-foot-8 forward averaged 13.3 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. He shot 55.2% from the field and scored in double figures 19 times on a team that finished with 19 wins.

Reneau played with the Nightrydaz Elite on the AAU...

Looking at the tape: seems like an offensive minded power forward. Excellent touch and footwork around the rim and is able to get buckets on bigger players by using the high glass.

Seems limited athletically and statistically doesn't shoot the 3 ball well at all (career 26%).

If we are going to pair him with Ernest Udeh (who i like a lot), Reneau needs to hit the lab and spend some VC on that 3 point shot. Needs to be atleast a threat to hit that and shoot it at 30%.

It's a good first piece tho, seems like a good college player. Hopefully he ends up being at best our 3rd most talented scorer.

Really like his demeanor. Team guy, engaged and great passer. His hands, frame and lefty game around the basket remind me of Michael Beasley at Kansas State (obviously not as dominant).

The tricky thing will be roster construction. Indiana tried to play him and their rim-running C together, but ultimately split them up later in the year. His ideal running mate is someone who can protect the rim and shoot threes, but that’s hard to find.

Agree with this. He's a piece that is nice to have offensively but I still believe in college basketball you win with a pair of good guards and you're only as good as your guards. Maybe I'm biased but that's my preference.

2 good guards that can score, a capable big man, and a wing or a stretch 4 that can shoot the 3 ball at a high clip = a winning team (also have to be able to play enough defense).

My assumption would be that if you had all of that and add a good 4 to it that it would only help. Only comp I have on top of my head is the 2013 Canes. Kadji was the 4 but he also had the 3 ball in his repertoire that Reneau doesn't have so it's a little different.

That was Kal'el Ware last year. Ironically, IU didn't make the tourney.

Think it works a little better assuming the C is Udeh because he really doesn't try to work the post much. He's used a lot around the arc as a screen and has the athleticism to crash the boards and rebound on the shot vs just live in the paint.

As someone mentioned above, Reneau developing his own 3, or even any catch and shoot ability at all, would be ideal for us and probably add some years to his NBA career. It should be possible for him. He shot the 3 ball decent a few years ago with1.5 attempts per game at 33%... guessing Ke'lel Ware was on that team as well.
