It may be a stretch to say there’s a full-fledged battle going on for the Rams’ nickel back job on defense. But at the very least, incumbent Trumaine Johnson is getting pushed by rookie Brandon McGee.

McGee, a fifth-round pick from the University of Miami (Fla.), worked with the starting defense in the nickel package Monday and Thursday, with Johnson working with the starters Tuesday and Friday. (Wednesday was a special teams workout.)

“We’re just alternating, just moving him up a little bit on the depth chart,” coach Jeff Fisher said of McGee. “He’s improving. He’s making a move, and he’s shown he can do some things on special teams. So we just want to make sure we’ve got enough people involved. He’s a very smart young man and he’s got a lot of football instincts for not playing a lot of football.”

A lot of people ****ed on me when I picked him for the Marcus Maxey break out role last season. He's too good an athlete to not make it.

McGee's main problems start when the games begin.
He was bordering on Kacy Rodgerish early in his career but got salvaged when Golden took over.
Here is to his continued progress.

From what I remember, he came in as a highly rated DB but was a QB in highschool, so he was a project. Didn't really even play all that much until Golden's first year (struggled early but improved as the season went on). Just needed time to develop. Would have been nice to have him this year as a RS Senior.

very happy for this kid...he is a positive kid and I believe he will be in the league for a little while

The kid got by because he was a superior athlete in high school... He rarely played db... He was a qb and wasn't productive... I definitely didn't like the signing because I felt he was a combine warrior... However he had a formidable senior season... I really liked how he took the initiative to work with Al Harris and elevate his play... He proved me wrong...He wasn't a world beater but his play vastly improved and he's only progressing... I'm proud of him... Go McGee! Represent! Go Canes!

I hope people realize how good McGee was last year, tough for CB when they have to cover without a pass rush. I'm actually surprised he didn't get picked higher then he did.

Nothing but the best for the young man. He really stepped up and became a man his last season. He's another example of the staff developing a kid they didn't have too much time with.
