STORRS, Conn. — Rick Pitino is again calling on the Big East to make changes and expand to a super basketball conference.

In an interview on SiriusXM with legendary former Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, Pitino reiterated his stance that the league needs to act.

A month ago, Coach K suggested that the ACC and Big East merge to form one big league, as conferences like the Big 12, SEC and Big Ten have bulked up.

This is a nice idea but we know that basketball doesn't generate as much money as football so if it don't make dollars, it doesn't make sense.
None of those Big East teams help improve the ACC as a football conference so this idea is dead.
Just being honest but 30 years ago, this would be a great idea but now, the football money is too big to even consider this move.

I see no way this happens.

Only way is if it is exclusively for hoops - UCONN (I know) being the sole exception.

IF, and I don't see how this happens, they permit a few schools to join for hoops only (UCONN being the exception), it'd be like 6 BE teams joining. The rest would have to seek shelter.

Under that preposterous scenario, I can see: UCONN, Nova, Marquette, GTown, Providence, St. John's, Creighton, and maybe Xavier joining.

Just sharing a wild narrative that two of the GOATS are pushing for ***** and giggles.

The Big East makes more money than people might realize.

A potential merger with the ACC for Basketball would actually be very profitable in terms of TV revenue.

Correct, and you can omit Depaul, Butler, and Seton Hall off rip.

The shoe ins would be:
- UCONN
- NOVA
- Georgetown
- St. John's
- Providence

Solid shot of joining (they are relatively new to the BE):
- Creighton
- Marquette
- Xavier

While discussing this, Rick was very clear that some teams would be left out... I'm not sure how that would / could influence existing ACC teams, but it'd a super conference. Coach K and Rick think this can save the hoops programs from the P2 - something to ponder.

Now that's a lot of teams, and I am not sure how viable it is, but merge the BE and ACC in hoops (basically happened when the ACC raided the BE last go around), and you have the premier conference in America (Big East aint no joke).

Butler should be playing in MAC or the B1G tbh. The rivalry games with Indiana & Wisconsin alone would be box office.

Depaul also should be in the MAC, or the CUSA.

Seton Hall would be the most difficult to leave behind because they're original Big East & a true staple of East Coast basketball historically.

Creighton is the team that kinda boggles everything up. They're a Midwestern team that's fairly new to the BE, but are also a perennial tournament team that is surprisingly very profitable.

Was real tough to omit SH. Truth is the ACC doesn't need a footprint in Newark if it has St. John's in Queens, but it's a solid point, and will most likely occur.

Great points on the other teams. I agree. Geographically they are a mismatch, but seeing how geography is a tertiary thing these days, I included them because they are solid teams (Creighton, Xavier, and Marquette).

The BE media rights are owned by Fox and I think NBC/peacock has some games as well until 2030-31.

The ACC media rights are owned by ESPN until 2036.

So unless FOX decides not to renew in 2030 and ESPN decides it will give more $$ to the ACC for adding teams nothing can happen for another decade.

Yeah, the whole FOX / ESPN situation muddies the waters, but I'd never put anything past anyone when money is involved.

I agree with you. The proposition seems extremely unlikely.

However, something is going to have to give. Pitino and K are lobbying for this for a reason. Just relaying the info to generate convo.
