"AL.com reported Monday that Bielema, a member of the NCAA's Playing Rules Oversight Panel, proposed a rules change that would create "a 15-second substitution period" after each first down to allow defenses to substitute. At the recent SEC spring meetings, Bielema framed it as a player-safety issue -- just as Saban did when asking for similar rules changes last October."

It's just another advantage offenses have in today's football. Luckily for Sec defenses there's not too many spread uptempo offenses in conference.

Just put in Tex AM vs AL and that'll show you why Saban cries about no huddle offenses.

They need to stop crying... Its apart of the game! If coaches feel they put their team in the best position to win by running an up-tempo offence, they should be allowed too. Adjust and move on....

If the SEc's asking for it I'm sure they'll get it. Let Saban cry a little more about it and it will happen. As mentioned above, it doesn't sound too bad of an idea tho.

not a bad idea if u ask me tired of these g ay offenses rushing so u cant sub its a cheat if u ask me. Too much advantages for the O and Im happy when a team that wins with D except for Bama or any SEC team or FSU and ND (and apparently those are the best team D's in the country). Every team wins with D anyway.

This is about competitive advantage, pure and simple. Let the coaches on offense scheme advantages within the rules and let the coaches on defense scheme adjustments.

Or, maybe, for player safety and to test the theory, we should force Bielema and Saban to sit their best players for one play after every first down to protect them from suffering injuries due to fatigue. After all, they are most concerned with player safety (as Bielema and Saban so overwork their running backs that they have little left when they get to the NFL).

Without some kind of rule like this were going to see more fake injuries like what happened in the NFL this year.

It's another power move by SEC schools if you ask me. Inferior opponents have to use hurry up against top rated defenses to get personnel mismatches. Take the hurry up away and it will ruin lower schools chances of having any chance in a football game IMO.

What might make some sense here is something similar to the rule in hockey where the home team gets to make the last substitution after a stoppage in play. In football it might work like the defense gets 10 seconds after a first down to substitute and the offense gets an extra 5 seconds after that before the playclock starts, giving the offense the advantage to match-up.

Without some kind of rule like this were going to see more fake injuries like what happened in the NFL this year.

Actually college has had this ........ especially teams in the PAC 12 that face Oregon. I think Cal did it a couple years ago against Oregon.

Definitely makes sense. I'm for anything that keeps football from turning into Euro Futbol.

This is utterly laughable.

You could make an argument that Wisconsin and Alabama has had the most dominant big nasty OL over the past few years.

You think they care about player safety when their big OL are pounding defenses relentlessly?

You think beilema cares about player safety when he hands the ball to monte Ball over and over into the teeth of defenses??

I remember Auburn's D-Line diving all over the ground in the National Champ game vs Oregon.

$EC $$$$$$ vs Nike $$$$$$ go.

+1

Beilema and Saban are to player safety what Obama is to personal privacy.

The old Cane Ds would have no trouble against these hurry up Os. They usually played straight up and dared you to beat them. No of Saban's "complex schemes". Just better, tougher, faster deferders. The wishbone and other option type O were the high end before THE U sent them into the history books and brought the pro to college. Saban hates the hurry up because it take him out of the game and his big wide body lbs become useless. Do you think Mike Barrow, Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Bennie Blades defenses would care if you "hurried". Maybe if it interferred with their victory dances, but NCAA outlawed that so, they would be just fine with it. I hope everyone goes to the no huddle. Those lean, fast saftey types we used for lbs will be just what the doctor ordered. An we have them in large numbers.

Bielema is a f'ing whiney *****.

His brand of football won't work in the SEC let alone with the substandard talent he has at Arkansas. He is going to fail miserably there and Alex Collins is going to regret his decision every day for the rest of his life.
