That same premise is why I might be alone on an island...but I firmly believe the Browns got the better end of the deal.

A running back is NEVER (yes Adrian Peterson is a exceptin but he's a once in a 10 year back) worth a first round pick. The Browns managed to get a first round pick for a running back who already has a full year of service as well.

A RB's shelf life in the NFL is basically 20 minutes. I found it pretty funny that Ditka was heavily defending the Richardson trade, from the Colts perspective, this morning. That's the same dude that traded his entire draft for Ricky Williams.

I'd say a RB is rarely worth a top 10 or top 15 pick.

If a running back is truly special, he's worth a top 10 pick. There is no other position where being picked in the Top 10 correlates more closely with a HOF career: Marcus Allen, Jim Brown, Earl Campbell, Larry Csonka, Eric ****erson, Tony Dorsett, Marshall Faulk, Walter Payton, John Riggins, Barry Sanders, Gale Sayers, OJ Simpson, LaDanian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson were all Top 10 picks. Emmitt Smith and Franco Harris were also first rounders.

But here's why Cleveland was smart: Trent Richardson is not a special back. He's a good back, but he absorbs too much contact. Lamar Miller is every bit as talented and he was a fourth rounder.

By the way, D, why isn't he in your starting lineup today?

Eh, I think you're reaching. Richardson has got everything going for him over Lamar except speed.

I agree with everything you said here...but just keep in mind all the names you rattled off there are basically hall of famers. Those are 1 in 10 year type players and without a crystal ball...not always very easy to guess who might be worth the pick that early.

As a general rule...it's foolish to take a RB early. I also agree with you that while Richardson is a GOOD back...he's not elite. That's another reason why I think Cleveland got the better end of the deal.

It's pretty obvious they are ALREADY targeting their franchise QB in next years draft? Can't blame them either...without a good QB in today's game you have no chance to be relevant. They could sign someone like Tate in the offseason to easily replace Richardson without having to give up a pick in return for his services.

He may have a little more going for him over Lamar, but I would be willing to bet Miller has the longer NFL career. As well as better production. Richardson is not worth 1st rd pick so the Browns got a heck of a deal. Especially with most teams in the league going to running back by committee, I can't see spending a 1st pick for an RB unless he is truly special.

Richardson will never be as fresh as he was as a rookie. He averaged 3.5 yards per carry. He will continue to get worn down and lose whatever explosion he had.

The Indy trade was the best thing that could have happened to him because his workload will go down. I think he'll produce next to a guy as special as Luck. He's a good back. But I'd rather spend a mid-first on a guy like Melvin Gordon from Wisconsin. That's the direction the league is going.

i would say that 99% of all running backs in CFB/NFL careers would be over w/ the 1st knee injury and definitely the 2nd knee injury.....

If Willis McGahee never suffered that knee injury in the Fiesta Bowl, he couldve had best back in the NFL type of production and hands down HOFer..... still a very solid career.

McGahee also had a knee injury at Miami Central in either his jr or sr year in hs - believe it was the leg that wasn't destroyed in the Fiesta Bowl....

the stains are so smart they took him top 5 and then traded him a year later for a pick in the 20's.

not seeing the genius there d.

seems like the same ol browns to me

oh, and love willis btw. been a fan of his since the fiesta bowl.

he has had a great career and I hope he has success with the browns.

on a different note, and not to takeaway from Willis because his success has nothing to do with the other rb's taken in that draft, but that might be one of the worst drafts for running backs in recent memory

I'd like to see Willis get to 10,000 career yards. Anderson and James are already there. Gore should get there this year. Portis finished around 70 yards shy of 10,000. No other college has produced NFL RB's like UM.

Gonna be tough.
