Miami guards Divine Ugochukwu and Nijel Pack were both ruled out due to injuries, which meant that freshman guard Austin Swartz had to step in as the starting point guard. This marked the first time this season that Swartz took on this role, and coach Bill Courtney gave him high praise in the postgame comments.
"He's not a point guard but was forced into that situation because of an injury. I thought he did a good job, again for your first time playing point guard in college in the ACC against a ball club. You know, Tyler Johnson saw him playing point guard and tried to go after him a little; I thought Austin handled it well and had a good game."
Swartz finished the game with 12 points, shooting 4-of-10. He also contributed two rebounds and one assist. Swartz handled the ball for most of the game and recorded only two turnovers.
Swartz played 31 minutes in the loss to Wake Forest, which is the most he’s played all season. It's great to see the younger guys like Jalil and Swartz getting some time on the court; they really need those reps to gain experience. Swartz's best game came in the loss against Charleston Southern, where he scored 15 points on 4 of 6 shooting.
