VT hit it's ceiling 16 years ago with Michael Vick. The only reason people have had any fear of VT the last 15 years is because of their defense and occasionally a good running game. VT fans are in for a rude awakening if the think anyone is going to come in there and start pulling in major recruits. Bud Foster paired with much improved offense under Fuenta is their only chance to come back to relevance. Even if that happens it still takes 4-5 years of prominence for a school like that to start pulling in blue chips like TCU did and TCU is actually in a talent rich state unlike VT.
VT has only had a defense ranked out of the top25 4 times in 16 years. 7 of those years they were top5. Also VT has only allowed more than 23ppg once in the last 8 seasons which was last year when they were ravaged with injuries.
If they want to fix VT it starts with the offense and QB play first which they addressed with their offensive minded coach. They are not in a recruiting hotbed. The only way they can address that is by winning with what they've got. The Trobs and Joker Phillips of the world aren't going to excel in backwoods places blacksburg with mid level talent.
I agree that Virginia isn't Georgia or Florida in terms of talent, and VT isn't going to be a lightening rod for 4 and 5 star recruits, but that doesn't mean that it's recruiting ceiling is what it was under Beamer and Foster. There is a ton of talent in the 757.
This is all irrelevant to what my point was anyway. If you want to say he's a defensive wizard and he will overcome the horrible recruiting classes he has been piling up lately, that's fine. That VT defense last year sucked because it sucked, not because of injuries. I think Tulsa is still scoring on them. But at best you're saying Foster is able to overcome the lack of VT talent because he is such a defensive wizard. Which means we should stay away from the talent he is offering. Especially at LB. He got lucky that that white dude that was a walk on a few years ago turned out to be a First Team All ACC player (i forget his name). That bailed out the lack of talent at LB. The rest of us can't overcome the Motu(blah blah blah however his name is spelled) of the world as our LBs. The rest of us can't overcome DE talent worthy of Wake Forest. We don't have the wizard, so we actually need talent. So we shouldn't recruit how he does. Which is my point. Foster isn't the guy to hitch your offer wagon to, which is what posters above were arguing.
