We cannot have our cake an eat it too.
Yesterday we witnessed a glimpse into the dark world or recruiting. We always witness the games kids play but never the ones coaching staffs must play in return. It is truly a game of chess. We are trying to maximize our expected value of an incoming class, and in order to do so we must have all the information available. It is easy to praise Golden after signing day, once he seems to have only offered all the plan B's when their plan A counterparts failed but didn't take on any of the baggage when the plan A kids committed. However this is the way they achieve it, they get silent commitments and plan accordingly.
As for Kirkland, he was a luxury position and it came up to be a possible commitment ( not guaranteed as he wouldnt even tell the coaching staff) or a guaranteed commitment of need. To maximize the value, unless Kirkland offered a commitment the staff had to take the sure thing. A team is greater than any one recruit, words we should remember. This is only a problem because it BTW, and our supposed connection. Its unfortunate, but this is a common story in recruiting. The burn is only because we expected BTW to transcend the rules but at the end of the day they are just another school.
