I have no faith in Rodgers, I will never forget how he just watched that FSU WR catch that TD. I think Dyron Dye needs to move back to DE and prob Perry also.

I'd be willing to be a large amount of money that Rodgers never goes on to do anything significant for us. That play showed me everything I needed to see. You cannot teach football instincts.....you're either born with them or you're not. That play was downright embarrassing.....not UM material to say the least. There's high school seniors that could have made that play.

In the past we have recruited skinny freshman LBs. You can't do that and expect Swasey, or anyone else, to turn them into monsters. If you want big seniors, recruit bigger freshmen.

I have a question for you. What did you think about Ed Reed 99 vs Penn State? That guy really sucked balls being too slow and failing to read the correct angle on that Chaffie Fields TD late in the game huh? Yeah that Ed Reed guy will never be anything more than an average player, that one play showed me everything that I need to know about that guy.

Rodgers was a RS frosh last season was he not? Reed was a soph and a 2 year starter I might add (Rodgers hardly had a spec of experience in a real game minus special teams). Maybe we should wait and see if our coaches can coach this kid up. Rodgers father coaches (ed) in the NFL, I'm sure that the light bulb will go off in him sooner than later. If he's still making the same mistakes as a junior then I will concur with your statement but not before he starts to get significant burn.

I wanna side with you and I do agree that your post makes complete sense, BUT that was one play that I can't get out of my head from last season (another being James fumble six at MD). He had all day to get to that ball. He could have picked it off, drilled the receiver, or just knocked it down. He had all day and did nothing and that's what makes me worry. It wasn't that he took a bad angle, misread a route, lost a WR, etc, but he just did nothing. Idk if he was flabbergasted that such a poorly thrown ball was in the air or what, but he took off long after he should've and just sorta watched the catch. Hope you're right, but I'm inclined to agree with Jedi, b/c I do think that most D1 prospects make that play.

The point is the kid froze like a deer in headlights. That was his first time in a big game playing safety at the college level. Freshman freeze up sometimes that's why their freshman.

How did Dorsey play in his first real action? Anyone remember? Vtech 99 was it not? Dorsey folded like a tent and **** his pants that's how he did. After that he re-deemed himself, settled down and cut loose.

1998 at home. Butch calls for an onside's kick vs FSU. The next play we go deep to a young Santana Moss who let's the ball hit him in the hands for a sure TD and he drops it. How did he turn out? A good receiver with any type of ball skills makes that catch every time and he didn't.

First pass Akeem Jolla caught at UM whent for a TD, I guess now he's in UM's hall of fame?

Brandon Merriweather was annihilated by Quincy Wilson as a freshman, ran over him like a fuggen rag doll. Merriweather never got any better and never realized his dream of one day being a UM stand out and NFL player. Tear shed for BM.

Can we at least watch the kid play more before jumping to conclusions?

I agree it wasn't pretty. Not at all, but I'm curious to see if he can improve. He still has a lot of eligibility left.

Anybody who frequented the Miami boards at the time of Ed Reed's ***** up vs PSU knows that Reed was castrated without mercy until 2000. Everybody and their mother was calling for Reed's head, "he is too slow", "average player", "just a 2 star that shouldn't have gotten an offer", etc...

No way to sugarcoat that ****** effort on that play, it's up to Kacy to determine if that play is his legacy or the moment he dedicated himself to the art of being a football player like #20 did.

You're trying to draw some sort of comparison between 2 completely different plays, in 2 completely different sets of circumstances, with 2 player who are on different planets in terms of talent?

Forget all that...let's go back and look at the play vs Penn State. Here's the play (forward to around the 9:40) mark.

On that play we blitzed. The corner fails to get a good jam at the line of scrimmage and allows Fields basically a free release. The QB makes a good play because HE LOOKED THE SAFETY OFF before making that throw. Watch the play and the QB looks to the opposite side of the field before making a quick turn and firing a perfect pass to Fields in stride. This isn't a lack of instincts, it's a case where you tip your hat to the opponent for

A) Having a good play called for the situation

and

B) Having a QB who pretty much executed perfectly and didn't telegraph where he wanted to go with the ball.

Did Reed get fooled? Of course....but it was a good play. It wasn't a lack of instincts or a case where a player has a dumbfounded, frozen look and plainly misjudges a ball in the air that should have been a routine play. The simple fact that Rodgers didn't even make a play to break up the pass AT ALL (i.e. take the PI if you have to before you give up an easy TD like that) pretty much ends the conversation for me. Rodgers had the play develop IN FRONT OF HIM. He had the benefit of having the play be in the end zone so he was able to basically defend the line and didn't have to worry about guys going deep behind him cause there was limited real estate given the location on the field where the play took place.

So in short....bad comparison between 2 completely different sets of circumstances. Trust me...I hope I'm wrong but a guy who can't make a routine play like that isn't likely to turn into anything we're going to remember 3-4 years down the road. That ball was in the air FOREVER and it all happened/developed right in front of him.

From reading this it's pretty obvious you and I are not going to agree on this topic. I pretty much disagree with a lot of what you've said here. A mistake is not a mistake.....a perfectly executed offensive play is not something from which you draw a conclusion on with regards to a players talent. How the heck can you know he was suppose to have Rumph's back exclusively? I'd be willing to bet he was responsible for the middle of the field as well on that play due to the simple fact we blitzed....a lack of numbers dictate that the field be divided between less people on the play...which means a greater range of responsibility. Again...the QB came away from center with his head facing to the right, Reed was obviously respecting another route on the back side (a post perhaps). Either way unless you can dig up some aerial film of that play which allows all the routes to be dissected I don't see how you can place all the blame on that play squarely on Reed. It was a very good play by that QB

Now, a play where a ball is basically thrown up for grabs and you're sitting in a cover two man under and you're the safety over the top...and you allow that to happen is a TOTALLY different story. I don't need an aerial shot to see the kid grossly misplayed that jump ball in the air and didn't take into account where he was on the field. He didn't even make an attempt to separate the receiver from the ball. I mean we were at the goal line right?

Agree to disagree...but I stand by my assessment of Rodgers. Let's bump this thread up later in the season and re-discuss.
