All we need is a DL

If we can have the current DL and incoming linemen take a big jump forward we can make some noise! You can get by with very strong DL in football. Hopefully guys like McCord, Pierre, Quan, chick, and the new guys make a serious impact. No defense is good without a DL. Look at the top defensive units and it starts and ends there. UF Defense took a step back by simply losing Easely. With our O, we should be fine with one of the QB in waiting just move the chains with all the o talent.

Let's hope for a much improved defensive line unit. And yes Jethro is ehhh. That may make a huge difference.

This is true but unfortunately we are still playing catch up from the misses at DT in past recruiting cycles. It is going to take a while and it seems we can't catch a break with JUCO DTs either. I expect next year to be another year where we are piecing together a DL by snagging kids like Renfrow and Gilbert.

It's like saying all Bama has to do is replace a their first rounders and guess what that's what they do.

I really try not to bring up dorito here because of the wave of negativity directed at his schemes, but I think its important to mention dorito in this thread. Do we just need a D line or do we need a D Coordinator who is not afraid to lead his own **** team?? Dorito;s schemes are all about plausible deniability. He can never be at fault as long as his defense just gives ground without ever getting burned. That's the way he coached the D at Temple and that's the way he's coached the D here for 3 years. Moreover, that's the philosophy that he openly said he supported in media interviews prior to this season. (See Peter ARiz's August, 2013 interview that was posted on this site.)


IMO we need D tackles AND a new D Coordinator.

I want to see us run the ball more. A productive run game will help our QB and keep our defense off the field. I would like to see Gus Edwards get 15 carries on the bowl game.

I agree with a lot of stuff in this post. I think our current DL would look a lot different in a different scheme. 2 gap 3-4 is so **** hard to run in college football.

Think about this future as an attacking 4 man front:

DE: Jackson/Harris
DT: Moten
DT: Valentine/Jenkins
DE: CThomas

Obviously we need a few more DTs but that is elite talent. Add AQM and McCord at DE and that is unreal talent off the edge. The problem is all these guys are young.

I just fear we are going to negate some of this talent in the current system.

You just don't have a defensive line overnight. It is one of the hardest positions to project, recruit, and coach up at the college level. It takes a few seasons to bring in the talent, coach it up, and have them yield results. You can't have one DL pay immediate dividends. It just doesn't happen. Each year fans say "we need a DL" and its another three years out we are from competing at the level we want to.
 
1. More aggressive defensive philosophy from golden
2. New DC
3. DL
4. LBs
5. Safeties
 
We have question marks in the front 7 next year, but we'll have a good secondary and good pass rushers. Golden and MDO should be able to construct something decent around that.
