DJ Williams and Jessie Armstead are probably the top 2 for me
I’m going to go outside of this year. I wasn’t on this board at the time, actually this board didn’t even exist IIRC, or at least Pete was giving updates on CI.
But getting Deon Bush and Tracy Howard was electrifying. The build up was incredible and for the vast majority of the year the thinking was we MIGHT get Deon if we were lucky. Howard was a white whale, getting him was mythical.
Obviously they ended up being one offs and not indicative of Golden’s future success. But at the time it was an incredible moment.
I was there the day he committed at Family Day! Earl Moore and a tight end also committed that day. I remember talking crap to Duke Johnson about racing him and Herb Waters. I thought Amari Cooper would commit that day too but dude didn't even want to talk to other people.
I remember watching coopers film and knowing instantly he was the best player in that class. Saw two routes and shut the tape off and said hes the best player in sfla
Coley was a big one especially because of his ESPN announcement.
I have to admit, I was thrilled getting Lingard's committment. No way we get a kid like that in the past - 5 star kid from central-ish florida? Huge pickup for a variety of reasons.
I also remember DJW's committment back on grassy. That was HUUGE.
DJ Williams and it's not even close. He was the biggest recruit in the nation with John Madden procliaming (incorrectly) the he could go straight from high school to the NFL if he wanted to. In fact, I seem to recall that he waited until after NSD, which garnered even more anticipation. The fact that Miami was able to pull the #1 recruit in the country from the west coast was indicative of the fact that we were on top of the college football world at that time.
Thinking back to those days, if CIS had existed at that time, multiple members would have died of heart attacks over DJ's recruitment. The myth of DJ's dog still lives on to this day in Grassy/CIS lore. Hopefully we get to experience similar successes here in the near future.
Willie Williams committing was by far the craziest in modern history. The chatroom on Grassy was out of control. For me personally the two most emotional committments were Frank Gore crying as he signed his NLOI to his dream school, and James Bryant crying as he broke his moms heart by choosing UM over Pitt.
There's some dust in the air in my office as I'm reminiscing about those two events.
