Typical Al Golden day: Gets in btw. 4:45-5:15am – writes recruiting notes, alumin/development things (autographs, etc). Then focus on special teams, and getting ready for meetings, practices of the day. Review off/def scripts. 7:55am – meet with special teams for 15 mins, off/def staffs meet (choses a room to go in depending on what is being discussed). Go out at have a walkthrough. After practice meet with the media. Come back in and watch film (1-3:30). Recruiting calls mixed in too. Hurricane club functions this time of year too (all around the state), ACC functions. All the camps in June.
How early do you identify a recruit? Thinks it is getting crazy now. Everyone offering sophomores, some freshmen. Have to think about it as a “coaches coalition” – get together with all the coaches and decide where we want to go here. Technically they are not allowed to receive a written offer until their senior year, but verbal offers are being made out there. In S. FL – able to see kids more readily because it is densely populated. Canes bball has contributed to great recruiting start as well as the spring practices (tons of kids attend). Al is stuck – has to “keep up with the Joneses”, but what do we really know aside from the film? Tough to get to know kids as fresh/soph. Kids change so much through high school. Tough to judge where that kid will be, and the physical development is also in flux and evolving. Tough to project that far out. Some guys are a no brainer, but the physical is so important that it’s tough to decipher. Some less fortunate/privileged kids flourish once given the proper tools and nutrition (mentions Temple). Same deal now at Miami. Some kids might be underrated, but once get the proper nutrition, workouts, etc – develop better than a 4 or 5 star, and also have a chip on their shoulder. Guys like gold – 4 or 5 star kids from top programs who are still hungry. Uses Wilkerson (Temple) as an example – great bball player in NJ. Underweight. Coach D watched him play basketball countless times. Did not beat anyone for him. Going into his Jr. year at Temple – football intelligence is incredible. Played full speed 100% of the time. 20-30 scouts were blown away. Made his work ethic part of his personality. What separates prospects? All the makeup thing. Mike James talked to the team after combine “We love you but we don’t need you.” (quote he heard at the Combine).
Do you feel any pressure/motivation because Miami basketball won the ACC? No pressure. Share the same goals. We all feel good about it. Doesn’t change the football team’s goals. We passed up the opportunity to play for the championship last year, hopefully we play for it this year.
We have some momentum. Ready to move into the new facility. Veteran team willing to work. Premier QB in the country leading us. Excited. Continue to build and grow. Can see the light at the end of the tunnel (NCAA stuff).
On Seantrel Henderson: Starting to play like the #1 recruit in the country. Doesn’t matter how many stars next to your name. Has his house in order, better decision making. Not talking about mis-steps, immaturity – talking about his game. Once you get to that point – can “move mountains”. Arrived at 388 and now at 340. Lean, flexible - his back is doing good.
Asked who the most natural athlete on the team is: Tough question. Mentions Flowers, but says Duke probably is the most natural. Jenkins also comes to mind. Says Flowers could play DT, TE, etc. Jenkins could play RB, WR. All three jump out.
What are the goals? Al never reveals internal goals. Sits down with the Sr.’s and develop them. We want to win our divison and have opportunity to play for the title. Won’t get into specifics. Focus on today, get to spring game and perform. Finish well academically. Avoiding the landmines – stay focused on the process and get better. Close the gap as individuals.
