In the 16-year history of the Broward County Athletic Association's football all-star game, there have been many guest speakers who have drummed home the word about education and what it takes to succeed - in and out of football.
This year, as hundreds of parents, players and cheerleaders packed into the Signature Grand in Davie for the annual football banquet, honoring some of the top players in the BCAA, University of Miami head coach Al Golden joined a list that has included Randy Shannon, Mario Cristobal, Howard Schnellenberger, Brett Bielema and other head football coaches who have stood in front of the future of this country and gotten the word out.
What Golden shared with the crowd on hand was an outlook that talked about overcoming adversity and standing tall in the end. He spoke abut the tough times that the University of Miami has been going through - as sanctions are being held over their collective heads on a daily basis by the NCAA.

“What you learn about yourself and your teammates during the tough times truly shapes your life,” Golden said. "It's easy when things are handed to you, but when you have work for everything, you value them more and never take anything for granted."
At a time when the Hurricanes could have been preparing for a post season bowl game, Golden fully stood behind the administration's decision to sacrifice yet another bowl appearance in the name of a lighter punishment when the NCAA hands down the decision on the short-term future of this program.
Whether you are a Hurricane fan or not, having Golden drop by to speak at a high school banquet when his schedule has him flying around the country, trying to get his football team better, is impressive. Here he was - among athletes who want to play at the next level - giving sound advice from his experiences in coaching and teaching.
"Coach Golden made a lot of sense up there," said South Plantation offensive lineman Ryan Duty. "You listen to what he had to say about taking on challenges and not running from them. That was something that really hit home to me."
Even as Golden spoke to the crowd and had the attention of many, some opted to carry on their own conversations, but that only put the likable head coach in a mode where he was out to make a point.
"I know that what I am saying may not hit home to a lot of you," Golden smiled. "But if I can leave here and make an impression on just one of you, this was a successful meeting."
That attitude has been catching with his team and assistant coaches in the two years he has been in South Florida. Throughout the evening, while congratulating the current players on what they have accomplished, Golden also paid the highest compliment to County Superintendent Robert Runcie, Athletic Director Damian Huttenhoff and Rocky Gillis for leading an organization that has been instrumental to the school.
Look on the current UM roster and you will see BCAA talent. Malcolm Lewis, Tracy Howard and Ryan Williams from Miramar. Athletes that everyone in that room could identify with. He not only talked about the trio as being high level football talent, but credited the coaching they received in high school for what they've all become today.
"This county has been great for us," Golden told the athletes. "We have young men who have been so well coached and taught by the people in this room, our jobs have become much easier."
For North head coach Jeff Mathis of Coral Glades and South head coach Art Taylor from Cooper City, to hear that kind of acknowledgment from Golden made what they do each year a lot more rewarding.
Taylor has been part of the coaching landscape for over three decades in South Florida, He has had the pleasure of dealing with many college head coaches. He was very impressed by what Golden said on this night - and has done since arriving.
"The man has had his back against the wall and one hand tied behind his back since he arrived here," Taylor explained. "This is someone with a great amount of character and keeping his word is the greatest thing you can say about anyone these days."
As Golden read from a prepared list of players to recognize, he also wanted to make sure that St. Thomas Aquinas head coach Rocco Casullo and Cypress Bay record-setting head coach Mark Guandolo were also part of the night. Both coaches have their teams in a position to win state titles. Both coaches have also sent players to the University of Miami.
"I know that Coach Rocco [Casullo] and Coach [Mark] Guandolo are getting their respective teams ready for the state championships and couldn't be here this evening," Golden pointed out. "But I want to take this time to single them both out for putting the BCAA right in the spotlight. They are just like everyone of you in this room. They work hard and surround themselves with great people."
As he headed out to catch a flight to get back on the recruiting trail, Golden was met by several who admire what he has done in his coaching career at Temple and now at the University of Miami. People who really understand the process and what it takes to build the program.
"I am only sad that Coach Golden couldn't stay around longer," parent Mary Williams said. "You could see the eyes light up in this room when he walked up to the microphone. It does my heart good to see that, especially during these tough times."
