Al Golden Interview w/ Big Dog (4/15)

He said he will be talking to each player in the next 3 days. Frank evaluations and expectations for them to improve. I expect some kids may not like the way that goes down. I don't have anyone in particular in mind, but we lose a few guys after Spring every year.

That "I" was me. Golden would never say that in a million years.

Sorry guys, I am from Boston, was out for the marathon yesterday. Surreal day. I will take this interview in within the hour.

"There would have been 5 or 6 sacks on SMorris if the defense wasn't laying off of him." -----AG

On Stephen Morris: Made some great throws, especially back shoulder throws to Waters and Scott. However, take everything for what it is. Defense laid off – could have been 5-6 sacks in a real settings but the refs let the plays carry on. If you give Stephen time, he will carve u up. But have to be careful (referring to protection breakdowns).

On the OLine: Bunche has been playing G for 2 weeks now. Great job with it, can play guard or either tackle position. DO not currently know the starting 5. Into the next phase (next 12 weeks) and see how things shake out. SH has matured, starting to do the little things right. Has everything in order off the field. Now understands the camaraderie of the OLine unit and its importance.

On maximizing talent: Talented guys (God given abilities) will always bounce around because someone will always be seduced by the talent. Guys that are talented AND develop a process – those guys become pro’s. Teams that develop this process go on the win streaks, win games even if they don’t play great,. More guys on the team who have buy in to this process, the better the team becomes. Currently working on developing this mentality.

Most consistent WR: Good question – would say Allen Hurns (but has been nicked up). Scott has been the most productive. Very talented – looking for consistent output every day. Physical, can block, excellent ST player. Had all the catches in the scrimmage. Must get his conditioning just a little little bit better.

Clear cut #2 QB? Orange Defense gave up 14 yards on 13 rushing attempts. Only allowed 3-12 on 3rd down conversions. Thought Ryan Williams did a great job against this defense on the second or third drive. It was essentially the #1 defense. Ryan did that (score on that defense) and was pleased.

Importance of the DTs to success: They will be critical. LR makes a play 12-13 plays in, rushing the QB, turns and runs 30 yards down the field and finishes play (pass to Beau). Corey King shows up every scrimmage, most be more consistent, but makes hits down the field, recovers fumbles, etc. CP around point of attack. Ivey and Moore need to keep working to “grow up.” Mentions the DT coming in this summer.

On the secondary in the scrimmage: Did a really good job. First time Dortch has been in that position. Graded out at 84%. Not fair –no QB pressure and no sacks. Malcolm Lewis and AJ plays go in the books, obv can’t count those. Tracy played 50 plays, graded out in the 80%’s. Man to man without allowing sacks of the QB will eventually lead to breakdowns.

On Sun Life renovations: Obviously, we are excited. Appreciated Mr. Ross and the Dolphins commitment. A huge event for everyone down here, more Super Bowl's, economic growth, etc. Ecstatic about it – would help us dramatically. Look forward to it.

On having the alumni at the spring game: Obviously, Ray Lewis son will be on the team. Was at a pregame function. Want him to be treated like any other player’s father (as far as no pictures, etc.). Talked to him, excited to watch his son on Sat and do TV on Sundays/Mondays. Don Sollinger gave an incredible speech on Friday night, “Attitude of a Champion.” On the Gino-Johnson play, Romberg made calls on the line like he was still playing. Smart and knows the game inside and out. Didn’t even know the play.

Ray Lewis being the father of a player (regarding his high profile): Definitely a little different (then other fathers). But always has been supportive of what his son wanted to do. On Saturday was hanging out with his 2 youngest, and let Ray Jr. do his thing. Great to talk to 1-on-1.

On guys who play in games better then they practice (mentions Denzel as an example): We have all had these kind if guys. But to be considered one of the greatest at your position, must learn the habits and discipline to do it every day. Practice at a high tempo – master those skills/process. If not, it eventually runs out on you/ Trying to push Denzel out of his comfort zone, need him to be a smart player, a leader for us. It will come as he matures.

On what comes next: There are about 90 guys in the spring. Will meets with the guys from 7-12pm and 1:30-5pm over the next 3 days to give them their evaluations. Exhausting but important to let everyone know where they stand. Same message from head coach, assistant coach, and position coach. The kids set their goals over the next couple months, and Coaches give them execution goals/plan on how to make themselves better. Assistant coaches out to recruit on Tuesday. Will start looking at first 4-5 opponents mixed in with recruiting and camps over the next 8 weeks until finally a break in July.

Love how he is pushing guys like Denzel, feel like that's the way to maximize potential, never let the guys settle and keep them pushing.

Well, I hope we now see why playing man to man at this stage is totally pointless and will get our DBs slaughtered weekly. 80s%? **** thats not good. And its not there fault either. Only can cover for so long. I know its gotta be frustrating for them tho.

There is really nothing you can do about guys like Denzel. You can teach and preach all u want but some guys just dont practice well. Jimmy J used to say that Alvin Harper only played well in practice on Friday. He sucked every other day but guess who was starting opposite M Irvin on Sunday when it was time to show and prove? Mr. Harper himself. Al just is gonna have to roll with it for now because ATM if we march a starting LB rotation of Gaines-Kirby-Figs out against Matt Jones and UF on sept 7 color me very nervous. Its gotta be either Denzel-Kirby-EJ or Denzel-Gaines-EJ. JMO.

It's hilarious how some people are bashing the pass rush when you're playing in a glorified 7 on 7 drill. The qb can stand in the pocket comfortable with no threat of being sacked or hit and even if you get pressure you have to stop.
